On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Villalobos: general for some general background and discussion.
See Villalobos: examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

Hi Kinslee.
Good to have you onboard.
You will find Alt1 and Alt3 will be become your best friends. ESC helps when things lock up, and the Help tab when you get stuck or things don't do what you expect them to do. :D :D

Hello All,

I am new to OWF and plan to begin with transcribing the February 1917 portion of the ship's log.

Question - I just uploaded my first series of XML files and I noticed that in one of the XML files it refers to the wrong .jpg file. I am not sure how I did that :o The actual .jpg file should be ....0046.jpg and the XML file refers to ...0045.jpg. Is this something that needs to be corrected??

Maybe you know how I did this so I can avoid it in the future??

Thanks for the help!!

I fixed the file name and the page link in the file, but I have no idea how it happened.

Thanks for checking, Randi.

Thinking back to what I was doing at the time, I was moving back and forth between Images of pages (I was trying to validate the dates on the pages given a typo on one of them) and fetching them by inserting the jpg page number. I wanted to be sure that I had the right page so I think just before I save 0046.jpg, I entered 45 in the page cell in the spreadsheet. Maybe that was it - not sure BUT, in any event it is fixed now (Thanks) and in the future, I will be more careful.

That sounds like the explanation.

If you want to look at other log pages - which can be very useful indeed - you can use the Open In Browser button.
It will open the page you are working on in your browser, and once you have that page open you can edit the link to give previous and subsequent pages:
https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorag ... 2_0044.JPG
https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorag ... 2_0045.JPG
https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorag ... 2_0046.JPG
