On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, knots, fathoms, courses steered, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
If the ship is not moving (e.g., at anchor), knots, fathoms, and courses steered do not need to be transcribed. In that case, the course is usually the ship's heading.

On the events page please enter: location information, sailing information, and any mentions of ice.
In general there is no need to include comments about the weather unless there is something unusual or extreme.
Comments about problems with or changes of the weather instruments are very rare but should be noted.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be transcribed, but if they are seen on the following days they don't have to be transcribed again. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 2).

Every page needs to have a date. The date is used to organize the pages.

Funchal Roads, Madeira


While sitting in Funchal Roads, Madeira, we visited a French Transport en route from Alexandria, Egypt to Mexico. I remembered something about France and Mexico, and here we see it in the logs.
At 11, the Seine (French transport steamer) came in with a regiment of Zouaves d'Egypt from Alexandria, Egypt to Mexico. Sent boat on board with Offer usual complements etc.

Steaming up the Delaware River
13 April
At 6:30 passed the bark A1 of Providence with colours at half-mast and Union down, at anchor, hailed us and said his crew were in a state of mutiny and refused duty. Wanted us to send a boat alongside - but we passed on. At 7:30 came in a collision with a canal boat, damaging her seriously.

Trouble in River City!!!

Boston Navy Yard
15 July
At 6:00 PM Cap't rec'd orders form the Commodore to send men on shore to help guard the Navy Yard from the Mob. At 7, sent the Marine guard & 1st, 2nd & 3rd Companies in shore in charge of Lieut. Comdr. Baken.
The article is not very long and a very interesting read.

PS The same group of officers and men plus the 4th Company went out at 2130 the next night.

22 October 83

From the log of Tuscarora 1700
At 5 PM made a sail on Stbd beam. Proved to be a steamer, made signals, but being so dark we could not make them out. Did not make our own number, but set our ensign. The strange sail fired several shots and shell at us, one of which went directly over us. Went to general quarters at once, and ran down within hail, when she proved to be the USS Shenandoah.

From the log of Shenandoah 1655
At 4:55 sail reported on Starbd Beam. Made all sail and stood for her. Proved to be a steamer standing to the Nd. 5:20 Took in and furled all said and set our number at the Fore. 5:40 went to quarters. 5:45 fired a shot across her bows. Afterwards fired several shot at her. At 6:00 spoke to the US Str. Tuscarora. 6:15 secured battery.

Off New Inlet North Carolina
12 December 1863

We were firing at a ship on shore, and were receiving fire from a battery and a Whitworth gun. One 2 pound shell pierced our hull about five feet above the waterline and entered a cabin. The Shenandoah was involved in the same action.

Off New Inlet
Previous to Divine Service, Capt Parker made a patriotic address to the crew and offered to pay to any man, lookout or not, who first discovered a vessel which should prove a lawful prize, the sum of fifty dollars from his own share of prize money. Or, if his portion should not amount to this, he offered to share equally with the one who first discovered the prize. Divine Service was then performed by Capt. Parker.

The voyage for 1863 has been completed. You can see a plot of the voyage here and, for more detail, you can download the KML file and view it with Google Earth. No mentions of people were transcribed.

As with the other ships from the early 1860s, data were random.
