7th Feb Starting to see wind forces in the 9-11 range 50mi out from Brisbane.
8th Feb Force 10s
9th Feb The graveyard shift observed a bright lunar rainbow to Ed which would have been nice to see. Not this one but similar I would think.
10th Anchored Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Mentioned in the newspaper of the time. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/162646792 Use "Find on page" to locate 'Tuscarora'.
Welcome to downunder in Cyclone season (Usually further up the coast)
The weather did improve on the 10th with clear skys in the afternoon.

Quotes are from Digitised copy of the paper and it's not my bad typing (this time)
The weather for Brisbane and surrounds from The Brisbane Courier for Feb 10th on page 4, (Suggest you widen the coulmn to make it easier to read ) Tuscarora mentioned on page 5. Further down page 5 is the weather report for Jan.
Further down is mentioned about Captain Miller arriving in Brisbane and a history of Tuscarora given. Mention was give that she took soundings for a cable to be layed from San Francisco to Japan.
From that voyage
...and it may interest some of our readers to learn that thc temperature at tho greatest dopth reached?between 2000 and S500 fathoms?varied between 34, 3S, and 40
and more still
TnE extraordinary versatility of the weather this summer appears, to a great extent, to con* firm the truth of the circular stonn theory.
(and it goes into more detail.)

Maybe an American attempt at spelling Fort Macquarie
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Macquarie
Fort Macquarie was a square castellated battlement fort built in 1798 at Bennelong Point, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, on the site where the Sydney Opera House now stands.

I agree with Randi. The Americans probably couldn't understand the way you people talk.

Reverse ditto. and wee dus talk propper.
The log stated Garden Island (South Elevation). Modern maps show it as part of the mainland. That would put the anchorage between Admiralty House and The Opera house.
During World War II, Garden Island joined Sydney's mainland through the construction of the Captain Cook Graving Dock in 1942 – expanding the 4.6 hectare site to 27 hectares.
We anchored in a great place to see the New Years fireworks. Pity they were not doing it in 1876.

Someone should learn how to steer a straight course, 15 changes mid ocean. Not sounding and only mid strength winds.

Maybe the only guy who knew how to steer the boat was one of your deserters!

Stopped for a cast.08.57 started wire out:- 09.54 reached bottom at 3540 fathoms, 09.55 started wire in:- at 10.00 wire parted.
Lost 3410 fathoms wire and one sounding cylinder.
Interesting, sounding at that depth.
Loc from Noon reading 29 13 43N, 155 52 24w
