Charleston, South Carolina
At 9:20, the sky, (at that time covered with thick clouds & having every appearance of rain), suddenly became illuminated with an intense light which shone brilliantly during 3 seconds so that objects on the horizon could be discerned as distinctly as at noonday. Three minutes after, a very heavy report was heard which seemed to be going from West to East. Suppose it to be the falling of some meteoric substance.

At 10:30 PM observed a total eclipse of the moon. The eclipse commenced at 9:20, covered the whole disc of the moon at 10:30 and terminated at 1:30 A.M.

0000-0400 Observed a great many meteors first three hours. Water very phosporescent

2030 Saw a beautiful meteor in the Western horizon moving from E to W moving through an arc of about 5 degrees and which at an angle of about 30 degrees first before dissappearing with the distant report of a rocket
