Thanks Matteo, I hope someone other than editors appreciates the efforts you are making.
Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion
Oh well its not a big deal, its fun to locate these places, and im giving a hand at least to other editors and, more in general, to the material that will appear on NHN... so im always glad to give a hand
I really appreciate the thought however, thanks!

A simple one this time. Pioneer references Valley Anchorage, Santa Cruz Island which is on geonames but not the database.

Point Fermin Lighted Whistle buoy is referenced by Pioneer. This link should give a more precise location
https://danapointboaters.org/documents/ ... hanges.pdf
I just asked to find Fermin and up it popped together with the lighthouse etc.

Great find!!!
Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion
Definitely!
I'm gonna add all the alternate names to the database, i think we already have all major islands and several of those old names, but will double check everything and add what is missing
Thanks EShane!

Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion
Added to the database and reworked a little the places we had in the bay, Point San Luis was one of the first we added in the database (#126) so it was quite off place and it included the light in its notes, i've now splitted the two.

At 1:36 AM on this page there is a reference to Point Ano Nuevo Light.
https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorag ... 2-0031.JPG
Our database has a link to Ano Nuevo Island Light. The point and the island are about 2000 feet apart. I have not been able to find any reference to a light on the point.
This article seems to blur whether the island is a point since it connects to the point by a sandbar at low tide. It provides a history of the light on the island, but seems to imply that references to the Point Ano Nuevo Light referred to the light on the island.
https://foghornpublishing.com/Digest/St ... ryKey=2862
Another lengthy article about the light makes no mention of a light over on the point.
https://www.sfgate.com/california-parks ... 893408.php
So my conclusion is that the Haida 1922 log is referring to the light on the island. Does anyone have any evidence of there having been a light on the point in 1922?

Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion
Yeah i completely agree they're referring the light that's actually on the island
In this 1910 map, although the print is a little faint, the light is clearly on he islet.
In this 1933 airway map the scale is not great but again the light seems to be distant from the land.
Best one is perhaps this 1921 edition of a 1902 map where the light is again clearly on the islet.
I will add Point Ano Nuevo Light as an alternate name for Ano Nuevo Island Light
Thanks gordon!

At 5:05PM on this page from 1922 there is a reference to Tennessee whistling buoy.
https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorag ... 3-0022.JPG
I cannot find any reference to a Tennessee buoy, but I believe it is off the coast from Tennessee Point, just north outside the Golden Gate.
This map shows a whistle buoy and bell buoy in that vicinity in the Bonita Channel.
https://www.historicalcharts.noaa.gov/i ... me=CP2841C
I think it may be at the location of this buoy.

Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion
Absolutely agree... everything matches, it's in front of Tennessee Point and its a whistling buoy even nowadays (the Bonita Channel Lighted Whistle Buoy No. 2).
From the map maybe it seems a little to the southeast (2 or 3 nautical miles) of the modern buoy, closer to the 6 fathoms line of the west side of Bonita Channel, but buoys position may have so many variations in the course of years that I'd keep the modern one unless the two are quite far apart.
I've added the alternate name to the database.
Thanks Gordon!

Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion
I don't know where this crew is coming up with the place names, but here's another one.
At 9:55PM this log page, also from 1922, references Coos Head Light.
https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorag ... 3-0023.JPG
Coos Head is located at the entrance to Coos Bay, but I can't find any reference to a light at Coos Head, including this map from 1922.
https://www.historicalcharts.noaa.gov/i ... 984-1-1922
The nearest light I can find is Cape Arago Lighthouse, roughly two miles to the SW.

Re: US (non-Alaskan) Place Names -- Discussion
Its definitely an alternate name for Cape Arago Lighthouse... found this 1940 postcard showing "Coos Head Light".
The two rocks behind it are easily recognizable as part of that rocky chain going north-northwest from the cape, and the image of the light in the postcard matches with the 1944 one available on wikipedia for the Cape Arago Lighthouse
I've added alternate to database and geonames, thanks Gordon!
