July 11 at Callao, Peru:

This is the second case I've seen on the Shenandoah of a guard becoming imprisoned for failing to guard.

8AM to Meridian:

By order of Comd'g Officer confined J.E. Carpenter (~m) in single irons to await trial by Court Martial for being asleep on post, when in charge of prisoners.

I had one, also on Shenandoah, who actually let a man in double irons escape!

It did look a bit like "pm" to me, but I haven't seen that rank anywhere before.

lists 27 Privates in the Marine Guard.

The very logbook on which I'm working has a similar entry, and it would make sense for a Marine Private to be a guard. I thought I remembered a seeing a different abbreviation for the Marine Privates, but not sure about that.

July 14 at Callao, Peru:

8AM to Meridian:

By order of Captain placed in confinement on bread and water for five days J.H. ODonnell (app.) and Chas. Bouren (I.C.F.) for insolence, demanding liberty knowing the ship is in an infected port.

Must have been maddening for the crew. They have been in port at Callao for about six weeks with no liberty.

Making it even more difficult was that it was overcast with mist and drizzle almost the entire six weeks.

Did I mention that prior to arriving at Callao they had been at sea for 10 days going non-stop from Panama to Callao?

Concord's crew would have complained bitterly and attacked someone in charge, got drunk, and tried to swim to shore. Among other things, of course!

July is complete.

Still sitting in port in Callao, Peru. Still no liberty. Still drizzle and mist 24 hours a day, with only a few brief sun breaks all month. It's so tedious that I'm becoming quite irritated, despite sitting here in the comfort of my home. Those poor sailors.

August is complete.


89 days in port now at Callao, Peru. Almost non-stop drizzle and mist the entire time, and still no liberty because the port is in quarantine.


The positive to this is that transcribing is fast. Lots of dittos in the data. So making heavy use of copy down and copy all.

... few - if any - crew members to report for returning drunk or late.

...but there's been a lot of abusive language and shirking, resulting in heavy use of the brig anyway.

September 3, still at Callao, Peru:

Meridian to 4PM:

Edmund Jansen (Bayman) being drunk, was placed in single irons under sentry's charge - searched him and found the missing Medical Store-room keys. Three bottles of whiskey found missing from Medical stores. Searched ship but unable to discover the stolen liquor.
