Firsts for Adelaide.
Adelaide was the first Australian capital city to be linked by telegraph to London, back in 1872.

Then, in 1881, the University of Adelaide was the first university in Australia to allow women to study, and in 1885 Edith Dornwell was the first woman to graduate from the university with a degree in science. South Australia was also the first state in Australia (second only to New Zealand in the world) to allow women to vote in 1895, and the first in the world to give equal political rights to women and men.

Small town which is the business and commercial heart of this wine growing area.

Difficult to find things to identify the town but here is some history.

* Prior to the arrival of Europeans the area was inhabited by the Kaurna, Peramangk and Ngadjuri Aboriginal people.

* First European colonists arrived in South Australia in July, 1836.

* By December 1837 explorers, led by Colonel Light, had reached the area.

* In 1839 Colonel Light, the Surveyor General of South Australia, sold off large tracts of land in the Barossa Valley. The area around this town was sold to George Angas.

* The town grew rapidly in the 1840s with the discovery of copper at Kapunda. It became an important stopover point for miners and bullock drivers on their way from Adelaide.

* William Coulthard built the Red Lion hotel (a slab hut) in 1843.

* The town grew around the Red Lion.

* Coulthard laid out the town in 1854.

* By 1855 Coulthard was so successful that he had built himself a bluestone mansion, Coulthard House.

* The Angas Park Hotel, known as the Hotel Sebastapol, opened in 1856.

* By the 1890s there were dozens of wineries in the valley including Seppeltsfield, Orlando, Yalumba, Saltram and Hensche.

* By 1929 the area was producing 25% of Australia's wine.

Vine??? The hillsides on both valleys in this area have lots of vines. You don't grow wines.

This is a rare railway town where, because state governments could not agree on a standarised railway gauge, three railway gauges (broad - 5'3", standard 4'8 1/2" and narrow 3'6'') once met.
At its height over one hundred trains a day were passing through the town. It is therefore hardly surprising that it has a museum in a railway carriage and its prime tourist attraction is the "Steamtown" Heritage Rail Centre.
There are four entry roads to the town and each has a different sculpture of a steam engine which was created by local blacksmith and sculptor, Colin Campbell. Example below.


The Town Hall is one of the largest town halls in South Australia. It stretches along the main street and dominates the streetscape. Built between 1926-1927 it originally had five shopfronts but they have all been converted into council offices.


Enter the building to inspect the ornate staircases and the impressive quilt, which was completed in 2001 after an estimated 2000 hours of labour, and which was donated by the towns Patchworkers.


Located in the small park in front of the Visitor Centre is a sculpture created by South Australian sculptor, Silvio Apponyi.

Today the town is a small service centre for the surrounding farms

The Quilt is a Federation Quilt acknowledging the 100th anniversary of the Australian Federation. Very intricate. Something like a mosaic the scenes are pieced together with different colored/ patterned fabric. Thanks for sharing Stuart. Have a safe trip.

Broken Hill's time zone is the same as South Australia.
