Mind you, it has nothing on Snag, Yukon.

On February 3, 1947, the record-low temperature for continental North America was recorded in Snag: −63.0 °C (−81.4 °F). That same winter, two previous records had already been surpassed: one in December noted various phenomena, particularly sound such as voices being heard clearly miles from their source. There was a clear sky (except for some ice fog), and little to no wind. There were 38.1 centimetres (15.0 in) of snow on the ground, but it was decreasing. Another town 180 km (112 mi) northeast of Snag, Fort Selkirk, claimed an even lower temperature of −65.0 °C (−85.0 °F), but the claim could not be confirmed.

Mayo, Yukon, also claimed a lower temperature, but it could not be confirmed either. The observer scratched the thermometer with a nail file at the level of the alcohol. The thermometer was taken to a lab in Ottawa where it was cooled until the alcohol contracted to the line scratched on the thermometer. The observers at Fort Selkirk and Mayo did not think of marking the point. The alcohol in all three thermometers was below the graduations. Apparently just saying, "Well, it was down to here," wasn't good enough for a continental record.

Christmas Eve in 1917 had some of the coldest weather in the Yukon. None of the readings were "official." They were taken at various stations along the Whitepass and Yukon rail and ferry routes, as well as by various Northwest Mounted Police stations. I was transcribing weather from the old Whitepass and Yukon log books. For these few days, I also took the readings from the Weather By Wire daily summaries from the Dawson City news. Some of the stories in the Dawson City News from this period were quite harrowing, as you can imagine.

The North American low temperature was -62.8 C set in Snag Yukon on 3 Feb. 1947
The temperature at the barracks in Whitehorse of -79F is equivalent to -61.7 C
The official record low for Whitehorse is -52.2 C set on 31 January 1947

The lowest temperature I saw was -48.0C.

Was in the 30s F yesterday with some snow that didn't stick. But then I got up at 5am today to get my brother up for his early shift and sure enough everything was covered in snow. Luckily the stuff on the driveway was still fluffy and therefore easily moved as opposed to the crunchy ice stuff. Right now it's 26F with an expected high of 30F and snow likely all day today and tomorrow. And thus "real" winter begins in Northern Virginia.

The cardinals in the bird feeder seem real happy, though. They were using their wings to brush the snow off the seed!

We had about half an inch of dry snow over the weekend. A fair bit of it is still on the ground.

No, that was Whitehorse in December 1996.

The coldest we had in the recent spell was -11. The record low for this area was set in Esquimalt Harbor on 1893-01-31 with a temperature of -18.9 deg C.

Woken up to at least 1" of snow. The forecast is for a max of 4C and sleet/rain all day, but then it's going to freeze overnight so tomorrow morning should be fun!

At least 1" of snow here to although it is supposed to stop snowing shortly.
However, the forecast is for a max of -7C.

Today is icy snow day. Not gonna go out and measure but definitely a few inches. Looks like our high today will be 32F. We had a dangerous tree limb looming over the road and JUST had guys out over the weekend to get rid of it and I'm so glad because I'd be really worried today about it snapping off and falling on a car.

A bit windy in the UK. Overnight Sunday to Monday we had storm Isha which brought gusts up to a max of 99mph. The whole country seems to have been affected so that some flights couldn't land anywhere in the UK or Ireland and ended up being diverted to different parts of Europe including as far afield as Budapest!

It wasn't too bad where I am, gusting up to 56/58 mph. It's still pretty windy, gusts to 42 mph, and then overnight Tues/Wed we're getting storm Jocelyn. This doesn't look so severe or so widespread.

Today, shortly after noon, the temperature is 33F.
The next few days are supposed to get a bit warmer.
