On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

At 0125 Thos. Cherquin, Gunners Mate, died of Asthma.

Noon: The Spanish Authorities, having refused the remains of Thos. Chergun deceased, made arrangements to bury them at sea.

and, from the next day,

At 9:20, the Spanish Authorities having refused to receive his remains, the body of Thos. Cherguin, late Gunners Mate, was placed into the launch, which, in company with the gig & 1^st & 2^nd Cutters in charge of Mr. Belknap, proceeded 3 miles to seaward, where the Burial rites were performed.

At sea

For those interesting in that sort of thing, there's a long dissertation about target practice. They hung a target, which is meticulously described from the Starboard fore topmast studding sail boom's end, and the various companies fired at it from the poop deck. You can imagine the difficulty firing at a target with the ship is pitching and rolling deeply.

At Sea

Reuben Warfield was dis-rated to Landsman from F. Officer's Cook for incompetency! Later, he was confined in single irons for fighting with the F. Officers Steward. Poor old Reuben was not having a very good day...

On the next day, same image, they scrubbed the decks without sand and clothes!

10 September
Noon : Lat 10° 14' 00"N, Long 57° 40' 00"E

At 7 o'Clock P.M., dark, Weather cloudy, and starlight at times, between hour of , , the sea changed to pure white, flaming color all around, resembling snow. This appearance of the sea continued two nights in succession, appearing immediately after dark. An examination of the water showed a great number of globular bodies about the size of a pin's head, each emitting a phosphoric light.

17 September

At 6:30 Fort held by insurgents commenced firing into the town.
At 7:30 the Imam's official came on board.
At 8:00 the Imam's fort began to return the fire.
Forts of Imam and of the rebels exchanging shots at intervals. Sent 2nd launch, armed with Carbines, in charge of two officers to ascertain the whereabouts of 5 officers of this ship, who left yesterday on an excursion.
11:30 Launch returned with officers.

8 October
Bombay

8:30 P.M. an officer of M.M.S. Coromandel came alongside and reported having picked up four of our men trying to swim ashore. Sent an officer alongside the Coromandel, who returned with Jas. M^cCarty, Lds, Chas Cope, Francis M^cNally, W.S. Wyman, C.H. All were placed in double irons.

The next day they were ordered to be placed in double irons from sunset until dawn and then to be prisoners at large during the day until further orders.

Jas McCarty was placed in double irons during the daylight hours for disobedience a few days later. Then, on the 19th at 11:00 A.M. he jumped overboard and tried to swim ashore. They sent a boat after him, he was picked up and placed in single irons.

Calcutta

Henry Scott, Lds, jumped overboard and swam to shore. They sent men after him, but they couldn't find him.

Wyman and McNally jumped overboard again, but they were picked up before reaching shore. Third time unlucky.
