May 7, New York Navy Yard

From Merid to 8pm
At 3. Commander Trenchard repaired on board and put the ship in commission. Commander W^m Reynolds assumed Command by reading his orders from the Hon Sec of the Navy.

From 8pm to Mid
A proper guard was posted to prevent desertion.

From 8am to Merid
Confined Charles Scott Coxswain and Wm Smith 1'st Sea under Sentrys Change on bread and water for 24 hours for using profane language.

June 13, en route from New York to the Azores

At 9am entered the Gulf Stream^*

From 6 to 8pm
Fresh Breezes Cloudy Weather Heavy Sea, Ship rolling deeply. all hands employed setting up preventer Backstays and securing Masts. At 6.27 started the Engine. No Hammocks down. Coffee ordered to be served out every 4 hours. ...

From 8pm to Mid
Strong gale from the Nd with heavy irregular Sea. All hands on Deck during the Watch. Ship rolling heavily. At 8 and 12 P.m. served out Coffee & Sugar.

^*The Water at surface column shows a 10 degree jump at 9am.

June 14, en route from New York to the Azores

Commences and until 4 a.m.
Strong Gales from the N^d + E^d. Ship laboring heavily, and taking Quantities of Water on Deck.
...
Served out Coffee & Sugar at 12 & 4. All Hands on Deck.

From 4 to 8 a.m.
...
At 5.30 observed a Water Spout bearing ENE.

Merid to 4 P.M.
At 3.25 wore Ship to the Westward.


We set sail for the Azores on 11 June in our freshly commissioned ship.
The storm did so much damage to the masts and rigging that we turned around to return to New York.

It being the National Birth Day, Flags were set at each masthead at Sunrise.

July 15, At sea making passage to Fayal Island (Azores)

From 4pm to 6pm
Light variable winds. Clouds presenting a peculiar formation and direction, in their courses, the lower strata moving from the Ed and the upper strata from the Sd. Water spouts forming in the Ed and Sd. At 5pm wore ship to the Nd. A whirlwind passed close under the bow nearly forming a waterspout.

July 21, At sea making passage to Fayal Island (Azores)

From 6 to 8 P.m.
... At 7.05 in piping down Hammocks, one was lost overboard, hove too, lowered the 1'st Cutter and endeavored to pick it up. After careful search, failed to find it. Hoisted and secured Cutter. At 7.35 filled away and proceeded on course.

Whilst my guy is reasonable easy to read I wish it was like yours.

From 6 to 8 P.m.
Sent a Midshipman aloft with Glass to lookout for rocks or discolored water. At 8 Pm called him down, nothing being in Sight.

July 24, At sea making passage to Fayal Island (Azores)

From 8 a.m. to Merid
The Crew was, by Order of the Captain examined by the Surgeon, to ascertain wether they were vaccinated.

At 3.30 breakers reported from the Deck, sent an Officer aloft and they proved to be the Reflection of Clouds upon smooth Places of Water.

We are sailing from New York to the Azores.
I am surprised how often they mention that there is a sail in sight. Some days they see several ships. Sometimes the other ship is close enough to identify the type of ship or the nationality.

In some respects, it is quite surprising, but they travelled well-known routes. Nevertheless, it does indicate that there were a lot of ships out there, going back and forth between Europe and North America.
