June 24 at Buenos Aires:
H.B.M.S Garnet made signal, "Hostilities has ceased for twelve hours" from last night which gives hopes of peace, but all hands below 60 are called to arms.
This was the first mention in the log of any sort of conflict, so I did a little research. I could not find a single source that tied things together, but here's what I found based on pieces of information from several sources.

Argentina became independent from Spain in 1810 and was in a civil war from then until 1880, fighting over what form of government Argentina should have. A battle was fought in Buenos Aires in June, 1880 that ended on June 23 with the result that Buenos Aires became the capitol of Argentina.

Buenos Ayres, Argentina

Celebrated July 4th on July 5th. :?:
Maybe because July 4th was a Sunday?

Sunrise
dressed ship with the US Ensign at the fore. Main and peak and Jack forward in celebration of the anniversary of the 4th July 1776.
Noon
fired a salute of 21 guns in honor of the anniversary of American independence, and H.M.S Garnet and German Corvette "Ariadne" did the same.

I was wondering why the log consistently used the spelling, "Buenos Ayres". According to this site, "Though the common spelling of the city’s name is “Buenos Aires,” Joyce’s alternate spelling draws attention to the etymology of the name, which is derived from Our Lady of Buen Ayre (“fair winds”), which would guide the sailors coming and going from this port city."

July 21 at Buenos Ayres

During rain squalls and winds of force 6 - 7:

12:05AM
Steam Cutter parted the hawser at the boom and drifted astern and then riding by the stern hawser. Got a guy on the hawser so as to have the cutter ride directly astern in the smoother water, but being so water logged and risking life to order men in to bail her out. She continued to ship the heavy seas and at about 12.15 she entirely filled and sank. Double bouyed the hawser. Ship heading at 12.15 ExS Bearing of the cutter as she disappeared WxN1/2N distant from ship about ten (10) fathoms. Marion bore from Cutter when sinking W1/2N. Depth of water five (5) fathoms. First bouy was placed on the hawser about ten (10) fathoms from cutter and the second on the end of the hawser.
Marion is the USS Marion which has also been at Buenos Aires for the past few weeks.

August is complete.

Two weeks sailing from Montevideo to Rio de Janeiro, where I'm guessing the ship will remain until the end of the year.

Such a boring log. Event pages have been quite sparse. Disciplinary actions quite rare.

A little excitement on Sept. 19 at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

5:15AM
James Grady (2nd Class Fireman) fell overboard from the swinging boom, picked him up with the dingy astern. Wm Morse (sea) jumped overboard from starboard gangway and rendered assistance to the man. Also John Smith (sea) jumped from the poop to give aid.

There are worse places to get stuck in. :D :D

Our Captain printed the monthly punishment lists in the log.
