"A line crossing ceremony aboard the Simon Bolivar in the 19th century. This ceremony commemorates a sailor´s first crossing of the Equator. A sailor is made to jump over a fire whilst the crew throw buckets of water at him. From América Pintoresca, published 1884."

Happy Birthday Espross.
When we crossed the equator I would ask the passengers onboard if they saw the dotted line.
When they said no, I would say, "well be must have sailed through one of the gaps".

Not sure where to put this so it's here to start with.
https://drum.lib.umd.edu/bitstream/hand ... sequence=1
Title of Dissertation: “THE SQUADRON UNDER YOUR COMMAND”:
CHANGE AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF IDENTITY IN THE U.S. NAVY’S NORTH ATLANTIC SQUADRON, 1874-1897
James C. Rentfrow, PhD, 2012
Some pages I found interesting, (by actual page not page number at the bottom right of the page)
P41 Fleet tactics
P70-73 Tactical drills
P94 mention of Kearsarge, she is mentioned a lot over the next few years.
P109-120 Ships of the Atlantic Squadron 1882 and Tactical manoeuvres
P132 Rear Admiral Jouetts request for funds near bottom of page
P161, P164, P210, P269, ships of the Atlantic Squadron
P22p Signalling by the Ardois system
P247 Signal and cruising in formation.
A line that made me grin in the choice of a ship name and cargo.
“The North Atlantic Squadron was rounded out by the dynamite cruiser Vesuvius”.
Which, it would bet, would have looked like Vesuvius if it went up in smoke and fire.
