Storis (1954) -- Discussion: Questions, Comments and Coordination

Post by Randi »

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances, courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record Sea Conditions or Swells from.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea columns.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae and volcanic activity should also be reported.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.
(If one transcriber does events and weather and they are in the same image, the date is only entered once.)

Ice hunting transcriptions were done for 1 January through 30 June, 31 July through 31 August, and 1 October through 3 December, so only the date and the weather need to be done now.
No transcriptions were done for 1 to 30 July, September, and 4 to 31 December, so a full transcription is needed.

On to August.
Hanibal94 wrote:Wed Jun 10, 2020 5:41 pm August done and uploaded. Please note that there is a significant gap in page numbers because they recorded so many events they had to use a second logbook.
Also, I upgraded to version 3.0 of the spreadsheet to get the UpAndOver fix after doing the first few pages.

Hanibal94 wrote:Sat Jun 27, 2020 12:49 pm On Sep. 25th, she encountered the SS Iliamna, which had a fire!
So the Storis escorted her to Port Etches, where they arrived the next day, and helped extinguish the fire:

I wonder why the Iliamna's crew couldn't extinguish the fire themselves - maybe it was some dangerous chemical fire that can't be extinguished with water?

Hanibal94 wrote:Sat Jun 27, 2020 1:24 pm And the day after that, Storis had trouble herself - the starboard engine started smoking, and was determined to have "suffered casualty" - which I presume means damage.

EDIT: From what I've read on subsequent pages, it looks like she only used her port and main engines for some time, but her speed seems to have remained the same - I wonder if she was deliberately built to work like that?

If you're going to patrol isolated areas, it probably is good to have a backup engine - especially if you don't have sails.
Hanibal94 wrote:Sat Jun 27, 2020 1:48 pm And September is done at last. Please note that they had to use a second logbook due to recording too many events, so there is a gap in the page numbers, like with August
Also, I only started transcribing US government ship names partway through, when it was announced that that is now mandatory. I made a note in the tracker of where I started doing that.

On to October.
Hanibal94 wrote:Mon Jun 29, 2020 8:07 pm October done and uploaded. It was weather-only, and she was in Juneau most of the time.
This is the 200th month I have done for OW Arctic - huzzah!

EDIT: Later that day, she brought them to Juneau. The survivors went to the hospital, and the body was taken ashore. (1305 - 1340)
