Your running hot today Randi.
9 min and I got an answer.
I noticed it gets cold in Brooklyn as I have just recorded temps of 13F (TT) on the 23 Dec 1883
According to https://www.currentresults.com/Yearly-W ... rature.php
The temp on the 23 Dec 1883 was -1 F
(It's 11 C this morning at St George. NSW)

No, fire over their heads!
Re: Interesting Log Entries
Quite an excuse. Should have run yellow warning tape to keep the merchant ship out. Oh, ya, no plastic tape back then. Guess its a bad idea for lots of reasons.

Re: Interesting Log Entries
I couldn't help speculating on the activities of W Massey which earned him 5 days extra duty.

Re: Interesting Log Entries
Chewing tobacco was a 10 day issue?? I guess I would have thought it a regular habit.
Re: Interesting Log Entries
Well, 10 days of extra duty might make it a less regular habit - or at least make him more careful when and where he does it.

Re: Interesting Log Entries
Jamestown doesn't feel a happy ship but this is a new one. One of the apprentices has been placed in confinement and is the subject of a Summary Court Martial. After a couple of short sessions the crew is assembled to hear the verdict. The verdict is not entered into the log but presumably was guilty of something. The Commanding Officer disapproves the verdict, releases the prisoner and returns him to duty. Sounds as if there is dissent in the wardroom as well.
