Last night the temperature in parts of the UK didn't drop below 25C breaking the record for overnight minimum (previously 23.9C). It wasn't quite that bad here, it was 22C at about 6am before it started going up again. I think that's higher than the average max temp for July in these parts!

The predicted max for some areas for today is 42C. For here 36C or 34C (depending which weather forecast you look at), but it does look like it will start to cool mid afternoon rather than keep getting hotter until early evening like it did yesterday. It reached 32C at about 6pm here.

It's 38 where I am in Surrey, south of London.
Heathrow has recorded 40+, unofficially.
Cooler weather (possibly with rain!) is on the way, they say.

Washington Post headline:
After 363 years tracking summer heat, U.K. could see an all-time high

From the New York Times:
On this day in 1967, air-conditioned subway cars debuted in New York. “Passengers forgot the usual stony stares to smile at one another in disbelief,”

The UK temperatures yesterday didn't quite make the predicted 42C but the max was 40.3C which did break the previous record. It got up to 34C where I am which is definitely too hot for me. Cooler now!

Do you folks in the UK use air conditioning? Were I am in Southern California, the first 5-7 miles from the coastline have AC only when they have remodeled. We live at 6 miles (Tsunami safe, I like to think). We bought our house from a building contractor who installed lots of gadgets and therefore have it. We used it one evening in the mid spring and have tried had to avoid using it since. I hear my neighbor's run all afternoon. Average temp 23. The sun is very intense but we cool down at night.

I would guess that people in the UK mostly use portable air conditioners if necessary.
I've never seen ducted air conditioning here that you would see in most Australian houses, but I lead a sheltered life.
It would be a waste of money and resources installing such systems 98% of the time. Up until now anyway.

It's our turn for the hot weather here in the Seattle area. It's been perfect for the past week, but all of next week is forecast to be very hot, peaking at 36 on Wednesday. It usually gets a couple of degrees warmer here in Kent. No AC here either. I escape to the basement where it is at least 10 degrees cooler at the start of a hot stretch, but heats up too after several hot days.

We are expecting to get up to 30C here. We, however, have AC, courtesy of our heat pump. We also upgraded our windows and insulation eight or nine years ago, which really made the house more comfortable both in the cold and in the heat.

Normally August is pretty miserable here.
This year the past two weeks have been slightly cooler than normal.
I hope we have the same next year!
