(This was probable the big Leonids Meteor Shower of 1866)

Early morning November 11, 1930 the following was recorded in the log of the Haida while approaching Cordova, Alaska.

2:55 Lookout reported that he had seen what appeared to be a green rocket bearing two points abaft starboard beam.
Changed course to 270 degrees true to head in general direction of reported rocket and increased speed to 80 r.p.m.
Cruised area of possible distress signal throughout remainder of watch.
4:15 No trace of any vessel found in area - light believed to be falling meteorite.

10pm. A very brilliant meteor was seen which started in the Zodiac bearing SW & pursued @ northerly direction, growing brighter for about 50 deg and then exploded.

Well I wonder what the Chinese thought about that? It was just 9 days before New Year, 25 January 1868, and the animal for the incoming year was the Dragon. I wonder if it was seen as a great portent?

On 17 April 1882
At 3.40pm she reports a halo of pale rainbow colours round the sun

Nearly a total eclipse of the moon took place, commencing at midnight, nearest totality about 02:00, too cloudy to see time of ending.

at 07:00, observed a waterspout to the NE, about 5 miles distant.

At 03:00, observed a comet, with brilliant [WORD MISSING], its tail being distinctly visible to the naked eye. It bore NExE 1/2 E (pc), about 15° above the horizon.

The Kearsage observed a transit of Venus on December 9th, 1874:

The transit of Venus across the sun's disc occurred today. The observations of the astronomers were successful in regards to the first and second contacts, the third and fourth contacts were not obtained. The photographers were generally unsuccessful.
