Muster Rolls of U.S.S. Kearsarge 1875-1879

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances (nautical miles and tenths), courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
It is not necessary to record State of the Sea.
However, ice mentioned in the weather grid should be transcribed using the magenta Sea column.

On the events page please enter: ice, location information, and sailing information.
Aurorae, volcanic, and seismic activity should be reported in the forum.
The names of US Navy and Coast Guard ships met should be noted. This gives the science team a chance to compare weather readings. You can include all ships mentioned in a single entry without a time or any additional data.
Other events are optional.

One person can do both weather and events (Stream 1), but the system also allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Stream 3).
Unlike in OW3, where three transcriptions were required for each page, we are doing only one transcription per page.

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.

See Kearsarge: general for some general background and discussion.
See Kearsarge: examples for a quick introduction to transcribing or a refresher.

See Transcribing Guide to learn how to transcribe the data.

I hope you tell the log keeper to be a little more thorough. This "going to Kobe from Nagasaki" with NO courses and NO distances and a vague remark once a day referencing some landmark that doesn't exist isn't quite cutting it.

April done at last. I'd forgotten how hard it can be to find the time when you've got a 40 hour/week job.
I envy those of us who are retired.

I have a harder time finding time now that I'm retired than I did when I was working 40 hrs/week and handling calls for help in the middle of the night and weekends.

It is, thanks! The first day was pretty tough, since I was returning to work after 3.5 months, and it was fully remote onboarding, which is NOT easy!
Additionally, this is quite a large company, so there were a lot of things to go through and setup (e.g. business credit card), and it felt a bit overwhelming.
So I gotta admit, I felt mentally distressed that evening, and the next couple days. At one point, I even wondered if I really had chosen the right job: "Oh jeez, consulting for insurance companies sounds so dull - maybe I should have tried harder with those cool startups in Berlin".
But now that the onboarding stuff is mostly over, and everybody has been very welcoming, I feel better about it. Also, it has occurred to me that the ongoing economic problems might lead to financial troubles for the cool startups, and I lost BOTH my previous jobs because of my employer having financial troubles, whereas insurance is SUPER stable even in bad times!

So yes, it was a bit of a shock, but now I feel better, like I've gotten back into the routine.
Also, a couple positive things have come out of it:

* I realized I have been neglecting self-study and practice to keep my coding knowledge and skills sharp, as this showed during my technical interview with one of the cool startups, and was the main reason they rejected me. But I also realized I have been thinking of said studying as a chore, when I can actually think of it as a challenge, as something I do to get better and go further, meaning I can actually enjoy it - and I have been enjoying it, lately! It's basically Teddy Roosevelt's philosophy of the Strenuous Life.
Bit of a pity that it took me so long to understand this, but maybe that's what growing up is: Realizing what a bloody idiot you've been.
* Now that my free time has gone from "more than I know what to do with" to "not much", I am much more careful about how I use it - in the past, I might have powered through a novel I wasn't really enjoying, but which did have some good parts, to get it done. But now I don't do that anymore, and I don't regret not doing it anymore either.

Wow! Thanks for the update! Starting a new job is always challenging and stressful, but it looks like you're getting it all under control. It is important, too, to keep your skills sharp.

Well done, Chris!!! :D :D :D
