Re: Kearsarge (1875): links, questions, comments, coordination, ...
August done, she went to Chefoo, China - one of two places I know of that sound like a sneeze.
(The other is Vaduz, capital of Liechtenstein).

I'll get to it soon. We have company staying with us until Saturday, so my OW time is a bit limited.

I was complaining about your log-keeper. He would go for hours through Japan's Inland Sea with no course logged and only one or two places mentioned, and they would be badly spelled. Also, he would also just say something like "At 7:15 Island bearing NE," with no name given. I thought, why don't you, Hanibal, talk sternly to these people?!!
And here, on Yantic, 1875:

The Shenandoah log keeper may have started the tradition in 1868. That's very similar to their trip through the Inland Sea. There were entries like, "land sighted", without even mentioning which direction, and "land no longer visible". If a place name was mentioned, it didn't match anything I could find on any maps. I wonder what the issue was with the Inland Sea. At least for the Shenandoah, the navigation entries were good once leaving Nagasaki. He would go for hours through Japan's Inland Sea with no course logged and only one or two places mentioned, and they would be badly spelled.
