Comd'r-in-Chief of the US Naval force on the Asiatic Station, detaching him from this command, directing him to turn the same on to 1st Lieut D.P. Foley RCS and to proceed to San Francisco Cal., and upon his arrival to the Duty of the Treasury. The command was in pursuance of said order duly transferred, all ratings established by Capt Hodgesdon being by him abrogated in compliance with the Regulations RCS. Lieut D.F. Foley RSC assumed command and re-rated all men previously holding ratings in their respective grades. At 3PM Capt, D.B. Hodgsdon RSC left the vessel and went aboard Zafiro for passage to Hong Kong.

  • 0645: during a fight between H Mitchell, coalheaver and C Howard , Fireman, P Sloane coalheaver without provocation hit Howard on the head with some heavy sharp cornered instrument or monkey wrench causing an ugly scalp wound, which bled profusely. The surgeon attended the wound and Howard was relived from duty, and placed in sick bay. After a hearing of the case at the mast the Commanding Officer directed that P. Sloane be confined in the brig with handcuffs on, this was done.

Eyes reacted normally to light and accommodation and there was no serum present in the ears. There appeared to be no bone involvement and there was no serum present in the ears.   • "1440: At 2:40 the fore topsail runner parted near the fly block, dropping the top sail yard to the cap; there were four men on the yard at the time, three of whom escaped with slight injuries, the fourth, John Owens (Carp) was thrown from the yard and fell to the rail and from thence overboard. The ship was hove to with fore topsail to mast, a boat was lowered, and Lieut S. M. Ackley jumped overboard to try and save the man, but all attempts were unsuccessful, and the body was not recovered. At 3:00 the life boat returned, hoisted it, and filled away again."

  • 1730: Partys returned at 1730 not having found any record on the island.
  • 1800: Standing off waiting for parties sent ashore to erect & examine Cairns on Littleton Is. Found cairn on SW side if island containing records of Lieut Garlington, stating that the SS Proteus had been nipped and sunk in ice pack to the Nd of Cape Sabine on the 23rd ultimo. Records also stated that Lt Garlington USN & party consisting of Lt J. C. Colwell USN, Dr Harrison USN, 7 enlisted men. 3 civilian employes + 2 esquimaut left Littleton Is on the 26th in 2 whale boats & dinghy steering to the Sd in hope of meeting the Yantic. Deposited our record in the same cairn.
  • 2145: EO Lt Green went ashore with whale boat & dinghy to examin cairns, one at entrance of harbor and another on Cairn Pt. They returned having found information of the departure of Capt Pike & crew of Porteus with Lt Garlington & Arctic Relief Party in boats to the Sd.
