The storm is starting to come through Kent (SE of Seattle) now. The strongest gusts so far have been 20 km/h. Forecast here is for gusts up to 70 km/h. However, unless the wind is coming from exactly the right direction, winds at my house tend to be less than forecast. The Olympic Mountains and Coast Ranges block the winds and create a rain shadow so that Kent doesn't get the full force of storms coming through.

Rain started a few hours ago with 3.05 mm so far.

A couple of squalls came through this afternoon. The peak gust was 26 km/h. Winds were much stronger a few miles to the west, over the hill down by Puget Sound, and a few miles to the east up in the Cascade foothills. Both areas have widespread power outages now. Lights just flickered here. Rain hasn't amounted to much so far.

They are forecasting possible thunderstorms tonight and stronger winds tomorrow as the center of the low passes to the north over Vancouver Island.

Where I live the weather has been OK. We had some rain last night but no more than a few puddles on the road. However, just a few miles away we had closed roads due to floods. However, trains from Glasgow across the border are 'iffy' at best so it's either go over to Edinburgh and down the East coast line or wait until they decide the track is safe for full speed running when normal service will resume.

We had 61.2 mm of rain yesterday. The previous record, for the University of Victoria for the 28^th of October, was 19.0 mm. The wettest October day was 31 October, 2015 with 45.8 mm.

The records for Victoria International had 20.0 mm for the 28^th, and 136.0 mm set on October 16, 2003! The records for the airport go back to 1940, and they go back to 1993 for the University. The university is 2.2 nautical miles from my house, and the airport is 13.4. I was curious about that reading from the airport, because no record was set at the university that day. However, the daily precipitation data for the university for that October was a column of 31 M's.

I just thought of Esquimalt Harbor. They had 114.0 mm of rain on October 16, 2003. (they're 3.3 miles from our house.)

The beautiful and haunting layering effect was caused by lenticular clouds.
Tasmania's mountainous geography makes it particularly suited to their formation.
The angle of the sun at the time made the clouds look so spectacular, a BOM forecaster says.
