I briefly read the 8am course as W1/8W but realized that wasn't possible.
A second look showed it to be S1/8W — sabotaged by the y of foggy.

The last sentence in the second paragraph really looks like "Broke a cat out from sail locker for use of ...", took me some time to work out it's actually "Broke a cot out from sail locker"
But I do like the idea of getting to cuddle with the ship's cat when you're sick
