We had a thunderstorm!!! Not much rain to speak of. Lightning hit a tree a mile from me and caused a small fire, quickly extinguished as the Fire station is just down the block. Thunder set off the car alarms. All that commotion and my rain gauge doesn't really register anything. Humph!
(Hope it didn't take too much water for the fire.)

We've just had a couple of days of beautiful weather. They were like early summer - warm, slight breeze, and still pleasant in the shade. I took this yesterday. Crepuscular rays escaping the mid afternoon 'brew-up' above the juneberry bush with the towering hollyhock stems rising high.

At Mackay (-20.557837989212825, 149.1228079305161) Queensland yesterday they had the largest hailstones recorded in Australia. 16cm dia, previous was 14cm.



Not bad for Spring.

To my untutored eye that looks like lots of 'normal sized' hailstones frozen together rather than having a single core.

Wow!!! That's big!!! (and yes, those really large hailstones are conglomerations of many smaller ones.)

That must have been SOME thunderstorm. The strength of updrafts to throw that chunk of ice up and down would be unbelievable!

Here are a couple pictures of a weather station tower I've been minding for the last few months! First pic is from setting it up in May, before we extended it, and second pic is it completely set up from a couple days ago. The T-shaped things on the right are enclosures for temperature/humidity sensors, and the ones on the right are combination 3-d anemometers and h2o/co2 sensors.
This is just a test of some new software and hardware in town, but it was nice to do a little fieldwork!

I want one to mount an antennae to improve my mobile (cell) reception which on a good day is about RSRP - 115, RSRQ -14, RSSI -94.

My friend, who was an inspector for Environment Canada in the Yukon sent me these when he retired. The post by ibhazel reminded me of his issues with the automatic weather station at Rock River, Yukon. It blew down at least twice and possibly more. Winds of 120 kmh will do that!

A rapidly deepening low pressure system from the Pacific will approach Vancouver Island today. Rain and strong winds will begin this morning.

Southeast winds of 70 to 90 km/h with gusts possibly exceeding 100 km/h are expected over North Vancouver Island. Southeasterly winds of 60 to 70 km/h with possible gusts to 90 will develop through east-west oriented valleys on Vancouver Island and along coastal regions near the Strait of Georgia and Haro Strait.

On Monday morning, as the low pressure system approaches the south coast, southeasterly winds will strengthen over the inner south coast. Western sections of Metro Vancouver will experience their strongest winds Monday morning with southeasterly gusts potentially exceeding 80 km/h before easing Monday evening.

As of now, there is increasing confidence for the strongest winds to be over West Vancouver Island and that the low pressure system will track across just north of central Vancouver Island on Monday evening.

Additional wind warnings may be issued as the event unfolds.

So far, the strongest one minute average wind speed, not gust, at Vancouver International Airport was from the remnants of Typhoon Frieda:
