Have not yet been able to find Goars Island:

The previous day they passed 'Indian Point', now named 'Mys Chaplin'. General heading is S as they head for home at San Francisco.
The next day they are at Lat 59.23N Long 175.01W

Hi Joan!

The island of Saint Matthew was known also as Matwi, Choris, Goar's, Goer's, Gore's and Gowers island... should be the one you're looking for. St. Matthew name is found even on very old maps (older than 1885), therefore Goars must be quite an old name.
Only the "Gore's" variant is mentioned in the Geographic Dictionary of Alaska we have in reference thread.

You are a hero! I'd tried finding other names for St Matthews since it seemed to be pretty much where I reckoned the ship to be. I thought I'd checked all the charts too :-\ Trouble with the whalers is - they do a lot of place names phonetically. And a lot of them are old and do hark back to names that are relatively ancient.

(They speak to the Bk Horatio and Andrew Hicks at 8 PM that day - cannot trace those logs)

From there they try to go NW (light winds prevail)
On 7th March:
7PM the West part of Maui bore by Compass N 60 miles


I think that this Bay might well be on the west coast of Hawaii.

Another mystery place from Navarch 18th August 1894

Sand Islands

The ship left Return Reef (at the Return Islands) and headed down to Flaxman's Island passing 'Sand Islands on the way. There are many islands in that area but I could not trace Sand Island(s). The logkeeper's writing and spelling are not at all helpful

Have not been able to locate Cape Itcher (not sure of spelling, but Joan and I agree on this version) mentioned in the Log of the Alaska:

Log entry for 18910511 mentions sighting Mountain Fairweather barring 60 miles NE. This would estimate the location of the Alaska on sighting Cape Itcher between Cape Fairweather and Harbor Pt.
