I replaced the screen on my front door. We open two doors for a great source of moving air. I have to ensure the screens are closed so that we keep thing OUT. Two gold finches this spring. Their little hearts beat wildly as I catch them to send them out and on their way!

Beautiful blue sky this morning and no wind and despite the sun having risen 2 hours ago its 6C! Actually I'm not complaining, I don't like it hot.

Every time I look at the forecast for this coming weekend they raise the temperature. Now they are forecasting 38 Saturday and 39 Sunday here in Kent. They're forecasting 36 for Seattle both days.

I'm looking at two forecasts for us. Typically the European model forecasts maximum temperatures about four degrees low when clear skies are expected. It's the influence of the water, which surrounds Victoria on three sides. The Canadian model has a much smaller grid spacing, so it can account for locations that are just a few miles from the water.

Here are the forecasts from the two models:

Code: Select all

Thursday 24 June Maximum: 21 C Minimum: 17 C Precip: 0.0 mm Max Wind: 14 kmh
Friday 25 June Maximum: 27 C Minimum: 17 C Precip: 0.0 mm Max Wind: 11 kmh
Saturday 26 June Maximum: 31 C Minimum: 19 C Precip: 0.0 mm Max Wind: 11 kmh
Sunday 27 June Maximum: 32 C Minimum: 22 C Precip: 0.0 mm Max Wind: 14 kmh
Monday 28 June Maximum: 33 C Minimum: 25 C Precip: 0.0 mm Max Wind: 14 kmh
Tuesday 29 June Maximum: 28 C Minimum: 21 C Precip: 0.0 mm Max Wind: 29 kmh
Wednesday 30 June Maximum: 26 C Minimum: 18 C Precip: 0.0 mm Max Wind: 22 kmh
Thursday 1 July Maximum: 25 C Minimum: 18 C Precip: 0.0 mm Max Wind: 18 kmh
Friday 2 July Maximum: 25 C Minimum: 17 C Precip: 0.0 mm Max Wind: 14 kmh

Code: Select all

Today A mix of sun and cloud. Windy near Juan de Fuca Strait early this morning. High
23 except 20 near the water. Humidex 27. UV index 9 or very high.
Tonight A few clouds. Low 16.
Fri, 25 Sunny. High 29 except 22 near the water. Humidex 35. UV index 9 or very high.
        Fri Night: Clear. Low 18.
Sat, 26 Sunny. High 32.
        Sat Night: Clear. Low 18.
Sun, 27 Sunny. High 33.
        Sun Night: Clear. Low 18.
Mon, 28 Sunny. High 37.
        Mon Night: Clear. Low 18.
Tue, 29 Sunny. High 31.
        Tue Night: Clear. Low 18.
Wed, 30 Sunny. High 28.
The record maximum June temperature for the University of Victoria, which is the location for the forecast above, is 32.2C. The record for Victoria International Airport is 33.5. It has a longer period of record than does the university.

If I used the four degree rule for the European model, I could argue for 37, but it doesn't seem reasonable to me. I guess we'll soon find out. Either way, it will be hot!

Awful! I don't know how you deal with that, I can't cope when it gets to about 30C. Best wishes to anyone in the area affected.

Phew. I can cope with mid thirties somewhere pretty dry, like parts of Egypt but much over 25c in humid Glasgow has me hunting for somewhere cooler. Mind you, our Greek students were moaning about the heat when I know from experience that Greece could get hotter. 'It's the humidity' they panted plus the fact that our architecture doesn't cope well with heat while theirs doesn't cope with cold as I can vouch for having taught there one January with inches of snow in Athens and frost In Patras where I was teaching on an Erasmus course.

I escape to the basement, where it will be 20 degrees Fahrenheit cooler at the start of a stretch of hot weather, but if it stays hot for a few days, the basement is nearly as hot as it is upstairs.

Not for us. We're about four km from the water, so the sea breeze doesn't make it this far inland. You really notice it, though, if you are very close to the water.
