Tell me what you want ;)
I'm thinking a very first topic prior to the How to take part in Old Weather topic with a name like About the Old Weather Project. It could provide an overview of the project and a link to www.oldweather.org

Do locked topics remain at the top of a group so that it could be at the top of HOME PORT: WELCOME TO OLD WEATHER?

Not to mention to learn about you, the user.
Data is the oil of the 21st-century's economy.

E.g. AdsBot and Google Adsense aren't scanning the forum to aid search results, they scan the forum to see what ads can be shown to the users.
Not necessarily at this forum, but other sites you visit that do show ads.

Sounds good (as long as Caro agrees ;))

How to take part in Old Weather is actually a board rather than a topic, so I can keep it at the top of HOME PORT: WELCOME TO OLD WEATHER.

Does this mean we will start getting ads for beautifully decorated cakes, VERY expensive old art, and old battered yachts for sale?? Maybe even a tea set.

While looking up some data on a location, I found this fun website. They have webcams for virtually every airport in the U.S. Of course, it's the ones from Alaska that are the most interesting. It gives meaning to the man on the Haida that said:
Weather conditions remained ideal except for the usual rain and mist to be expected in the Aleutian Islands at this time of year.
If you wondered what Savoonga or Saint Paul look like, this will give you an idea.

A very happy birthday to you Helen

I thought a jolly tea pot to serve a decent cuppa to go with Randi's Angel food cake might be useful

;) :D :D

We saw a raccoon in the garden last night!
It rummaged around for a bit, ate some compost, and left.

Apparently, raccoons are quite common in Germany. In 1934, someone released a few to "enhance the local fauna", and in 1945, a whole bunch escaped from a pelt farm. Almost all raccoons in Germany today are descended from those two groups!
Unfortunately, they are rather invasive due to not having any native predators, and being extremely adaptable and omnivorous. They are even strong enough to break open bird nest boxes!
And while you can hunt them, that doesn't really help as they reproduce quickly.
So it sounds like Europe will just have to learn to live with these furry rascals.

That's amazing! I had no idea that you had racoons running wild there. Do people worry about them at all? I know next to nothing about the little critters.
