Pity this was long before smartphones or video cameras - I would love to see that!

Unusual detail of offence given by USS Jamestown
8am, 4 Aug 1849
Called all hands to witness punishment. Punished Peter Clark (seaman) 12 lashes with the cats for insolence to the Boatswain & saying that the Officer of the Deck might kiss his arse

Haida, June 4th 1926 at 02:15:
Eight cells, comprising the power plant of the short wave radio transmitter, blew up and were demolished. Battery had been on charge until a short time before the explosion. Explosion occurred when radio operator on watch, John Manuel, threw switch to draw power from battery.

:o Sounds like John Manuel was lucky not to get hurt!

That's impressive - given that most whale skeletons at that time would have been chopped up for bone/return to the ocean deep  :)

Belvedere (ODHS222 tape) 11th August 1898

Clearly the crew of the Belvedere have a sugar addiction of a high order...

"got 2 bbls molasses from A Knowles let them have Whale Boat set of Oars & Boat Sail"

I've got a tin of black treacle somewhere...I wonder what I could get for it? Jib boom? Spanker sail?

Haida, 17 Aug 1929
https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/med ... 8-0023.JPG

1600 Received radio message from St Paul Island stating Calibration had been postponed indefinitely due to flight of Zeppelin.

[It may have been this flight, "Graf Zeppelin’s Historic 1929 Flight Around the World"]
There was some 5-6 basically SW winds that day.
More to follow if noted.
