Going back to 1898/1899 in the teeth of the Arctic winter (Canadian Northwest Territories coast).
The crews of the whalers have to find meat to supplement their stores during over-wintering. They all quote the help of Inuit hunters to bring in huge weights of deer meat, plus some seal and fish. The Inuit are respected by the whalers. Captain Bodfish, a man of few words, noted the sad passing of one of the Inuit's children. 8th January 1899 'Mutton head's baby died'. The following day they 'put the child out on the land in a box good ways from the ship' which was in keeping with the Inuit tradition.
