It’s up to 10 C in Tofino, with heavy rain and gusting winds. Very heavy surf. Our power is fine, and I think we should be OK from now on. Still lots of weather problems on the mainland. Vancouver is expecting 50 mm of rain with 90 mm in the neighbourhood where I grew up, which is near the foot of the North Shore mountains.

I heard today from Dean at North Tonawanda, about 20 km north of Buffalo, NY.
A summary of the weather where he lives: "Four days of 60 knot winds and blowing snow. Wind chills in the -50C range!!!".
Dean might tell us more when things return to normal. 🤞

Why I moved to Victoria. Well, why I suggested to daughter Sheila to move to Victoria. Then, when she moved to marry the man of her dreams, why we moved here. Not to hot, not to cold, not too wet and not too dry. Climate-wise, the Goldilocks place in Canada.

These records are from the Victoria University Cs weather station. I use this station for comparison because it is close to our house both physically, and meteorologically.

Period of record: Temperatures 1993/01 - 2021/12, Precipitation 1993/01 - 2021/12.
Note: The UVic weather station has frequent outages, so take these numbers as a guide. Actual precipitation is somewhat higher, as are the number of days.

The highest temperature was 37.8 set in 2021.
The normal annual maximum temperature is 31.9.
In 2011 the highest temperature was only 28.0.
The highest temperature for Fernwood in 2022 was 31.7.

In 1998 the highest mean temperature was only 12.2.
The normal annual mean temperature is 11.0.
The lowest mean temperature was 9.8 set in 2011.
The mean temperature for Fernwood in 2022 was 10.8.

The lowest temperature was -11.2 set in 2008.
The normal annual minimum temperature is -5.5.
In 2015 the lowest temperature was only -1.3.
The lowest temperature for Fernwood in 2022 was -10.0.

The wettest year was 2021 with 913.6 mm of precipitation.
The normal amount of precipitation is 659.6 mm.
The driest year was 2000 with 398.0 mm.
The total precipitation for Fernwood in 2022 was 649.5 mm.

The year with the most days of precipitation was 2007 with 202 days.
The normal number of days with precipitation is 165.
The year with the most days of precipitation was 1993 with 118 days.
The number of days with precipitation for Fernwood in 2022 was 160.

Due to airline issues, we drove our next two generations home to the San Francisco Bay area instead of their planned flight (on an infamous airline.) 5 days later, 1.5" of rain in my gauge. Not too bad of driving conditions, either.
Wish you all a Happy Safe New Year.

Oh your relatives got stuck with the airline problems, too? My cousin and her family got stuck in Orlando for a week because none of us live anywhere near Florida to come rescue her and absolutely everything was booked: planes, trains, cars, etc. Apparently the moving truck rental people were even on the lookout to make sure no one was trying to drive home in a U-Haul (like in Home Alone )!
