Re: Tuscarora (1875): links, questions, comments, coordination, ...

I've done a bit of digging and found this article that goes in quite some detail about the voyages of the Tuscarora and the development of the sounding apparatus. https://www.hydro-international.com/content/article/george-belknap-and-the-thomson-sounding-machine I caught this sentence in the article...

Re: Tuscarora (1875): links, questions, comments, coordination, ...

We spent a month or so in dry dock at Mare Island towards the end of 1874 which included a Commander change after which the soundings continued but they stopped recording temperatures at different depths. Unless they started again at some point in 1875 I think 1873 and 1874 are the only years where ...

Re: Volcanic and seismic activity

I think I see the issue. On 21st of June, the noon position is 44 59N, 149 37 E which is off Iturup Island. By 8th of August they have sailed up the Kuril Islands and across the Aleutian Islands and have just left port after a stop at Unalaska and are doing some survey work nearby. Noon position on ...

Iturup Island makes more sense (Yeterup is an alternative name in the database and the recorded noon position makes more sense). There are several volcanos on that island and I'm not sure which one it would have been, but possibly Kudryavyy as what little information I could find suggests that ther...
