In general, if you are looking for place names or for maps and other useful references, you should go to Latin American and Caribbean Place Names -- Reference.

You can use this topic to search for information that has not yet been added to the Reference topic.

You can also use this topic to ask for help with reading a Latin American/Caribbean place name or locating the place.
Give us a link to the log page(s) where it is mentioned and tell us approximately where it occurs on the page(s).

Note: Place names include lighthouses.

If you have information about a place name or find a useful reference, please help everyone by contributing it to this topic.

When contributing place names, try to provide as many of the following as possible:

Country
Name in log
Latitude and Longitude (preferably in decimal format with a minimum of one decimal place - two decimal places is the preferred format)
Current name (if different)
Link to more information
Also, in case of problems, a link to the log page(s) where it is mentioned would be helpful

Jamestown has just reported that HBM Dauphiney (not listed on the mid victorian navy list of ships) was dismasted in the Harbor of Magallan 19 June 1852 meridian to 4pm

I can't find a reference to the Harbor, thought it might be an earlier name for Punta Arenas but not listed in Geo Names. Can anyone help?
The ship has just entered Rio de Janeiro anchorage so her crew definitely deserve commendation for getting her that far with 2 jury rigged masts.
Thanks for any help, tracing the ship would also be much appreciated

I could be completely wrong, but looking at that logbook page I think it says "Harbor of Mazatlan" as in Mazatlán, Mexico.

I can see Mazatlan also, but Mazatlan is a looong way from Rio de Janeiro

Thank you all. I agree it could read Mazatlan BUT I find it hard to believe that she rounded the Cape under 2 jury rigged masts. Surely there should have been a shipyard on the Pacific coast of the Americas where she could have got some sort of refit. I believe the RN base used to be in Valparaiso, Chile but moved to Esquimalt in Canada in the 1840s. Surely from Mexico either harbour would be preferable to beating round the Cape even if she didn't want to go to a civilian dockyard. I don't know how the payments for such extensive work would have been managed but I'm sure there should have been some way using the Consular service.
I was struggling to understand how she arrived at Rio under jury rig from somewhere along the Straits of Magellan without getting a repair at an intervening dockyard but sailing down the Pacific coast of S America as well amazes me.

Knowing logkeepers write names incorrectly sometimes, I decided to cast a wide net. Got a little more info for you.

What this logkeeper wrote as "HBM Dauphiney" is in fact the sloop "HMS Daphne" (the one built in 1838). Here is some art of "HMS Daphne Dismasts off Mazattan October 28, 1851" ("Mazattan" meaning "Mazatlan")

According to the description, Daphne really DID go around the Cape.

That's an amazing find arboggs. Thank you so much. I'd love to get my hands on her logbook, should be in the National Archives somewhere. Just think, this entry is 8 months after the incident and she's still on the wrong side of the Atlantic if she wants to get back to England. They raised them tough back in the old days!!!

I did a bit more delving into the RMG catalogue (not the easiest place to search) and came up with this entry from the epic voyage

The sketch is of Daphne rounding Cape Horn. The blurb gives more details about Daphne's journey home and the career of her Captain.

It's these occasional gems which make editing logs so enjoyable. I put them in as brief footnotes with links so I hope that there may be a reader or two who will enjoy them as well and think something like, 'Good heavens, fancy doing that'. It's one of the few times I wish I lived in London - I could then get access to Daphne's log but I live in Scotland and the logistics are a bit too daunting. It's also one of the things I most like about OW, other members join in to dig out the stories.
