3 Henashi Saki (Henasi Saki) (40°37'N., 139°52'E.), about
3.5 miles farther WSW, is the W extremity of Fukaura Hanto
and is marked by a light. Tsubaki San, a 60m hill at the point,
appears as an islet from a distance and is very conspicuous
from N or S.
Caution.—Kyuroku-jima (Kyuroku Shima) (40°32'N.,
139°30'E.) consists of three above-water rocks, about 17 miles
WSW of Henashi Saki, with other awash or sunken rocks in the
vicinity. The W and largest rock, marked by a light, is about 57m
long and 12.8m wide; it has two knobs, 6m high, and resembles
a vessel from a distance.
The other two above-water rocks lie
about 0.1 mile ENE of the largest rock, and are 2m and 4m high,
respectively.
2.3 A pinnacle rock, awash, and a rock with a depth of 1.8m, lie
about 0.2 mile SE and 0.3 mile NE, respectively, of the largest
rock. The sea breaks on the sunken rock.
2.3 A rock, with a depth of 5.2m, lies about 1 mile W of the largest rock of Kyuroku-jima, and a rock, with a depth of 4.1m, lies
about 0.3 mile NE of the above 5.4m rock.
2.3 The bank, on which all of the above dangers lie, has irregular
depths and vessels should avoid the area. The edges of the bank
fall suddenly to depths of over 200m.

Hi Matteo, would it be possible to get the name 'Bittern Rocks' registered with Geonames please? Thank you ;) :)

Thanks everyone for all the contributions!!

@Joan: No luck with that Hawaiian bay, but with a lot of imagination maybe one could read (both) the text as Kaiula? Kailua Bay is not too far from the westernmost point of the island
Hi Matteo - so sorry - I missed this reply - oops! Thanks so much. I'll put that into the transcription workbooks because it looks highly likely to be the very place. :D

Will update ref threads soon with all finds! Thank you all!

@Joan: Added the alias to geonames for Bittern Rocks, very nice search!

@sleepyowl: For the pilot books, we have all of them (I-VI) in the "China/India/Malaysia/Indonesia/Philippines/Asiatic Waters - Large area maps & Pilot books" section of reference thread... all are 1900-1920 editions... maybe it can save you some time searching them around the internet! Thanks for the "Malacca and Sumatra" 1951 sailing directions, added it to the references. I've also copied the "China Sea Directory" to the Japan section as well (we had it in the China section only) so it can be found more easily.

I clicked the first two and maps came up. I re-posted them with the chart title for easier access.

I need help with a location in Japan on this page,
https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorag ... 10-032.JPG

I'm struggling with the entry in the sail column to the left of the events section at the end of the Meridian to 4PM shift. I believe Sozu Island and a reference to Soza Sima elsewhere in the events section are the same as Shodoshima Island in Harima Nada. However, I need help with what appears to be something like, "Tukabe Island."

Shodoshima Island

It's probably Fukube Jima

Japan Fukube Jima 34.42582 134.28862 Kagawa

Unless you get a perverse sense of gratitude in finding these things, just enter your best guess, and I'll get them when I'm working on the voyage. It's easier fore me to do it at the time than to do these one off challenges.

That must be it. The location fits. While working on this I came across a couple of references to Uchinomi as being a good place to anchor and was guessing they must have been near there. Fukube Island is in the right location relative to that.

I was wondering how much effort I should put into finding these locations, knowing that you have good tools available for finding them when you process our transcriptions, although I do like the challenge. (I was a Geography minor in college.)

It's up to you as to how much effort you want to spend looking for these places. I'm OK either way ;)
