I say - that pie on the left looks rather good. I'd be happy to do a bit of clog dancing to earn a slice :D Very good New Years party! :D

I assume the couple in the dark clothing are suggesting dry January would be a good idea, but why does the man have a duck on his shoulder?

I think the lady in black is saying, "If you think I'm going to clean up this mess, you've got another think coming!!!" And the man is looking up the rules regarding the eviction of tenants.

That's one wild painting  Wasn't quite that mad in this house, but we did laugh a lot. Today the decorations came down. Sob!

Perhaps the phrase 'Lord love a duck' indicates that the saintly and dark-apparelled pair are on the right side of a moral life. What ever is flowing out of that barrel is heady stuff - perhaps the monkey got some as well? :o
I bet there were some sore heads the next day

Great picture and legend, Chris :D

I love everyone's "take" on the picture. There is so much going on. I understand that at that time lots of people may live in one house/ room and an animal or two might come walking through. This one has SO much going on though; you have to wonder what the artist had going on in their mind. Was this commissioned for the office of the head of some sort of "institution?" Was it a gift to a mother- in -law? Was it painted as a raffle donation at the local church faire just to see who might bid on it?
I'll bid one chicken.

Well, the title is "Beware of Luxury"
It was done by Jan Steen in 1663.

Thanks, Randi, I see some of his work was a representative depiction of Dutch life, some was influenced by the theater. No OW stories are mentioned.
