Title: Transcriber Weather
Post by: Shesswin on 23 December 2019, 18:25:40
Well, I have lived in AK for 18 years.  This will be the first time that I can remember that we haven't had a white Christmas.  However, even though it is not white as I type, the forecast is calling for 1-3 inches tomorrow!  How I hope they are right this time.  Merry Christmas to everyone!

And Merry Christmas to you. I hope Santa brings you some snow. It is disturbing to live that far north and have no snow for Christmas. Here, in Victoria, it's the opposite, it's disturbing if we do have snow.  ;D

In the past 63 years, we've had snow on the ground for just seven days:
1964 12 25      5 cm
1971 12 25      8 cm
1990 12 25      4 cm
1996 12 25     19 cm
1998 12 25      2 cm
2008 12 25     35 cm
2017 12 25      7 cm

We were visiting our daughter here in 2008, and I spent a lot of time shoveling. She refused to go out if the ground was white.  ::)  She didn't even have a snow shovel, so I had to borrow one from next door. When we moved here from Whitehorse we brought all our shovels and scoops with us.  ;)

Whitehorse, by the way, is 49  out of 49 for white Christmases.

Christmas Eve in Darlington, Co Durham, in northeast England, and not very Christmassy weather.  6 degrees C, drizzle, clouds.  Tomorrow is forecast to be sunny though.

Not very Christmassy in the village of Vanga, Skane County, Sweden, either.
Cloudy, misty and drizzling, with a high of 6 and low of 2.
We have had a White Christmas once or twice, but I can't remember when - too long ago!

A very mild 11C in Surrey, south of London, for Christmas Eve.
Rain forecast ... we don't need it.
Cooler tomorrow with sun!  :o :)

Christmas morning will likely be white here in the Seattle area, but only because of frost; no snow.  The weather station at my house recorded a low of 0.5 C last night which was cold enough to turn everything white this morning.  Humidity was 93%; so plenty of moisture in the air.

A white Christmas this year? You must be dreaming. The National Weather Service is predicting a high in the low to mid-50s, with partly cloudy skies and no precipitation on Wednesday. "It's pretty much a zero chance of a white Christmas," said Bill Modzelewski, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh. But while white Christmases might be "just like the ones I used to know," according to Bing Crosby's classic song, that's not really the case in Pittsburgh. From 1880 to 2018, only 14% of Christmases in Pittsburgh were classified as white, said Mr. Modzelewski, meaning more than an inch of snow falling that day. The last Christmas with that amount of snow was two years ago, with 1.4 inches. Before that, the last one was in 2002, with 1.8 inches.

The forecast says that it will be 6C and clear in about 40 minutes.
We'll see.
It is currently 4C and foggy/overcast with an air quality alert.
Title: Re: Transcriber Weather
Post by: Michael on 24 December 2019, 17:49:54
I classify a white Christmas as one with measurable snow on the ground. Counting one as a day with snow falling will give you a smaller number. Counting it that way gives Whitehorse 44 white Christmases out of 63 for 70%. Counting white as having snow on the ground is 49/49 for 100%. They started measuring snow on the ground in 1955, and measuring precipitation in 1942, hence the difference in the number of years for falling snow vs snow on the ground.

A smoggy little Christmas: Bad air expected to linger through Thursday
By Don Hopey

For the past four days, the Pittsburgh region has had some of the worst air quality in the nation, and that won't change much Wednesday, when a smoggy, not white, Christmas is the forecast.

I noticed my eyes burning a bit last night and I was rather surprised since that almost never happens to me.
They are already burning this morning :'(

According to the weather button on my laptop, the record for today is/was 57F in 2015.  After eating our Christmas feast, one of our crew checked their phone for current temp... 61F.  I will admit the phone (Dayton) and the laptop (Columbus) are located about 50 miles apart, and Dayton does trend slightly warmer.

Pittsburgh just had its wettest decade on record
By Anya Sostek
Pittsburgh hasn't just felt super rainy -- Year-end and decade-end totals from the National Weather Service prove it. The year 2019 ended with 52.46 inches of rain -- the third-wettest year on record since 1871. The year before had the most rain ever -- 57.83 inches. And the second-wettest year also came in the last 15 years -- 57.41 inches in 2004, when Hurricane Ivan hit in September. "We do expect that this trend will continue," said Josef Werne, a professor in the department of geology and environmental science at the University of Pittsburgh. "It will get warmer and wetter in Pittsburgh."

Pittsburgh hit 70 degrees, breaking the all-time record of 68 degrees on Jan. 11, set in 1890, according to the National Weather Service in Moon.
It also marks the first time the temperature has reached 70 or higher in the month of January since 2005, meteorologist Jenna Lake said.

Haven't seen one snowflake all winter. We might still get some....but it's looking unlikely  :-[  The Japanese Quince is covered in blossom so I kind of hope that nothing happens in the next two weeks ;)
You could pop over and do my sidewalk Michael - it's got plenty of thriving moss on it  ::)

We had a bit of sunshine, which has been a rare phenomenon for quite a while.  And there are weather warnings for three of the next four days - two for wind, and one for rain.  But they're only yellow so unlikely to cause many problems.  Given how people have been suffering with floods, I feel very lucky.

I like 'dumberdash'! A great Scots word :D
Title: Re: Transcriber Weather
Post by: studentforever on 21 February 2020, 01:23:14
Sorry Joan, dumberdash comes from my Cheshire childhood when I still used quite a bit of dialect. Unfortunately we had lots of 'overspill' settlement in our area after WW2 and an influx of out of area teachers who didn't understand the dialect which was then discouraged. Result, it's almost died out which is a shame. I probably belong to the last generation to grow up with it and I only use a few words now where there isn't a single conventional english equivalent.

I mowed the lawn yesterday for the first time this season.  I don't remember ever mowing the lawn in February before.  We had record rainfall here in January followed by a few recent sunny days in the upper 50s and low 60s (Fahrenheit) which is making the grass grow very fast.  Normally it's still dormant this time of year.

Yesterday was abnormally cold (freezing or below), but month to date and year to date it has been abnormally warm. It has also been abnormally rainy. 2018 was the rainiest on record and 2019 was the third rainiest.

Our temperatures tend to vary significantly over a week. Today (Sat) is supposed to be a high of 7C and a low of -2C. Wednesday is supposed to be a high of 13C and a low of -3C. Next Saturday is supposed to be a high of -2C and a low of -8C. We'll see ::)

Very windy over here in the Seattle area too.

Peak gust at my house SE of Seattle was 34 KMH with accompanying sleet.  Winds tend to be diminished here by a ridge the other side of the valley.  I'm sure there were much higher winds elsewhere around Seattle.

There was a sudden increase in pressure and temperature, along with heavy rain when that peak gust hit.

Lot of rain and wind yesterday, on and off. It's still muddy in a few spots.
More occasional rain this afternoon and the next couple days - I'm glad I'm already home due to Carnival!

(My employer's parent corp. is located in the Rhineland, where Carnival is a BIG thing, so they give everybody half a day off on this day so they can get home without hassle.
As we are now officially employees of said corp., we get to benefit from this too!)

Rain and wind.
Yesterday saw 28 mm rain and a force 6 to 7wind, with gusts over 75 km/h.
Therefore many Carnival parades had to be cancelled, too dangerous with those high floats.
Luckily the local children's parade wasn't cancelled Saturday, though everything above 3 metres high had to be removed from floats for safety.

This was our daily electrical output from our 21 solar panels from the last week. Our payback, at this time of year, is $0.14 per kwh.

2020, 02, 17,  25.0
2020, 02, 18,  26.2
2020, 02, 19,  26.9
2020, 02, 20,  27.5
2020, 02, 21,  24.4
2020, 02, 22,  14.7
2020, 02, 23,   9.4

The solar output gives a good indication of which days had no cloud.

Black Ice.
Wretched stuff has caught me out a few times.  When an Australian friend ventured to the UK for the first time just before a nasty snow-ridden Christmas I left a note of all the rotten things that can catch you out. She really didn't believe me about black ice...until it turned up.  :(

Very windy here in Oxon, but dry at the moment. If you're getting that lot, Caro, we'll probably get it too  :'(

I just queried a web site that responded that in a straight line I'm 89 miles SE of Michael here in Kent, Washington.  There was an even balmier high of 13.9 and low of 7.0 at my house today.

Camellias are starting to bloom, although the one in my backyard always seems to bloom several weeks after the rest of the neighborhood.

By the way, I just learned that Kent was renamed from Titusville after Kent in England because that was a major hop growing region and back then hops were a major crop here in this Kent.  Today the crops are mostly gone, replaced by warehouses and manufacturing plants (and major traffic problems  :( )

Cold and rainy today but none of yesterday's snow and sleet, I'm glad to say.
Tomorrow, sunshine and hail showers. Roll on spring.  :)

That looks a beautiful spring day - I love the deep blue sky.  We've had some blue skies here, but rather paler, and with more cloud cover.  And not much in the way of blossom out yet either.

Rather alarmingly, all temperatures were either as warm or warmer than predicted.

I don't have the stats to back it up, but it certainly feels milder than I'd expect at this time of year.  Which is great on one level, but of course worrying as well.

My forsythia is in full bloom and one of my flowering currant bushes is showing colour. The cotoneaster buds are swelling, so are the flower buds on the rhododendrons. Two pigeons were cooing and twining necks and the rooks have got several nests built. In fact spring has sprung (it will probably snow next month! Don't laugh, I was bridesmaid for a friend in April and we were all wearing thermals under our dresses then picking our way through the snow in our matching sandals, and March that year was lovely too.)

Sat out in the garden in my fleece and had a 'picnic style' lunch. I believe that fresh air and sunlight is good for me and I'm sticking to my story. The birds weren't so happy - only the robin had the nerve to go to the feeder but it is my garden afterall. Later on I went for my walk, people's gardens are showing spring flowers and leaves all over the place - very encouraging.

It was stormy all night with lots of rain and wind, but the sun just appeared a few minutes ago.

My camellia bush is loaded with the most flowers ever.  A warmer summer than usual followed by a wetter winter than usual must have helped it.

The government here is encouraging people to get out walking for both the physical and mental benefit.  I'll probably go out walking this afternoon.

Here's my Juneberry bush, now nearly a tree. It's my view from my computer. It's flowering a month early. The blossom lasts about a week. My Japanese neighbour came to photograph it...so sweet.
The leaves are just coming out and are a light bronze at this point, they will be green in about 2 weeks' time. If it's frosty at the end of summer it does that whole amazing New England red-leaves thing. :D  It's slow growing - it's been there about 20 years and started at about 3ft high. I guess it's about 11 feet to the very top now. So glad that I bought it. :D

At least we have a couple deckchair on the balcony, so it's still pretty enjoyable... hope people won't rush around during Easter festivities, with these temperatures it will be difficult to keep everyone inside!

Edit: ... and in fact, just a couple minutes ago, we received the phone call from civil protection agency, telling people that controls and checks will be enforced starting from this evening  ;D

Log keeper weather.

Just for fun, I pulled out the weather for noon on this day from those ships for which I have weather data. Just a note for some of our new transcribers: depending on the ship and the year, the Amt column had the Amount of cloud or the amount of clear sky, so 10 could be either overcast or clear.  ::)

Also, some logkeepers used to enter dittos in the columns. Because double quotes cause me problems, they have been converted here to an exclamation mark. In this case it would refer to the value at 1100.

You can also see that most ships were still in port in late April.

A few minutes ago, at 9:40 AM, the temperature at my house had already reached the forecast high of 29 C for today.  The micro-climate around my house usually causes it to be a couple of degrees higher than the forecast, but it looks like today will be significantly hotter.

This will be my first trip down to the basement computer this year.  It tends to be 10 to 20 F degrees cooler down there.

It got up to about 24C in my garden yesterday but felt even hotter on my bench out of the breeze, so I had to go and sit in the shade. Today there is a nasty cold easterly wind, it was 11C at 6am this morning, which is about the same at that time yesterday, but it looks like the temperature's going to drop during the day.

Lovely sun still up North but the breeze is CHILLY. In the shade and unsheltered from the wind it feels COLD, although I suspect that some of the feeling is the body complaining about the abrupt change. It seems to get warmer mid-week but we seem to be in for cloud if not rain.

First proper rain since lockdown. Not very heavy but wetting the grass which was looking a bit dried up despite the wet Feb. The next question is what to do about my permitted exercise. Do I give it a miss for the day or grit my teeth and get damp. Looking ahead the next few days are a bit mixed so I will probably do a shorter walk because the daily hour is slowly reducing my weight. I wasn't obese before but my BMI was over 25 (I'm not sure it would have been as high if I was still my original adult height though!!).

I am also doing slightly better on the exercise front than before lockdown, although I am probably doing more sitting in front of the computer.

We had 9 mm in the past 24 hours, with hardly anything forecast for the next ten days. Ever since this started, our provincial health officer has been encouraging people to get outside for walks, while keeping a safe physical distance from other people. In our neighbourhood, that's easy to do, so I try to break up my time sitting here working on OW by going for about three walks per day, which I was doing before this anyway.

The thing I like about this whole business is that there is so much less traffic that I hear so many more birds. The other traffic thing I don't like is that there is always someone who decides that empty streets are made for speeding. Last night someone in something that sounded like a Ferrari type car went up our little street at what sounded like at least 100 kmh. You could hear the snarl of his engine for about ten blocks in each direction.  >:(

I sympathise Michael. A lot of people started to get around last Sunday before the PM announced the changes. The AA (Automobile Assoc) commented that it seemed to be the worst drivers that were out and about and busy speeding. I'm sure that he didn't mean 100%, but it was clearly a worrying number.  >:(

We should have a similar temperature. May, for us, was warmer and wetter than normal.

The highest temperature occurred on May 10 with  27.8 degrees.
The lowest  temperature occurred on May 07 with   3.7 degrees.
The average temperature for the month was 14.2, the normal is 12.9.
The total precipitation for the month was 35.3 mm, the normal amount is 27.5 mm.
There were 11 days with precipitation, the normal is 11.
The most precipitation occurred on May 16 with 8.6 mm.
The highest wind speed occurred on May 02 with 23 kmh.
The windiest day was May 06.
The amount of solar power generated was 1050.7 kwh.
The most  solar power was 44.6 kwh generated on May 26.
The least solar power was 9.6 kwh generated on May 30.

They have been forecasting thunderstorms a few times in the last few days. I was curious about how often thunderstorms occur here, having lived here, they don't come to mind all that often. So, for 55 years of weather data for Victoria International Airport this is how many days had thunder...

Jan  1
Feb  3
Mar 10
Apr 11
May 17
Jun 19
Jul 31
Aug 30
Sep 21
Oct  9
Nov 12
Dec  5

July has 31 days, so with 55 months of July in the record, the odds of a thunderstorm are just 1/55, slightly less than 2%. For June, it's just over 1%.
Title: Re: Transcriber Weather
Post by: Bob on 11 June 2020, 20:51:34
So, a roughly 90% chance of not having any thunderstorms at all in a given year?   :P :o
Title: Re: Transcriber Weather
Post by: Michael on 11 June 2020, 21:23:12
Those 1 and 2% values are the chances of a thunderstorm on a given day for a given month, not for a given month.  ;)

There were three years with no thunderstorms: 1964, 1974 and 2000. The two years with the highest number were 1963 with 14, and 1978 with 7. The average was 3.

So, the chance of a thunderstorm in a given year is about 95%. The total number of days with thunder for the period 1955 - 2010 was 169. There are some places in the world that get more than that in one year.

I have to think twice about where you folks are. A thunderstorm starting in Kent and going NE would leave you in the North Sea. It is very confusing if you're thinking of England ;) ;D

I grew up in Dagenham. Pretty much every time we had a thunderstorm the house in the middle of Arnold Road on the north side had its chimney struck by lightening. It's not far from the Broad Street shops, so folks used to pop round to see the carnage. I don't think that the pointing in that chimney every got to be more than twelve months old.  :o  I just checked the street map and it looks like they pulled the house down and built a walkway through the land. Not sure I'd walk it holding a brolly in a thunderstorm though   ::)

The Kent where I live is near Seattle.  It was named after the County of Kent in England because it was a major hop producing area and this Kent at the time hoped to become the hop producing capital of the world.

It's going to be hot here tomorrow. Today was stunningly sunny. Two teeny weeny itsy bitsy clouds put in a pointless attempt to give us a break from the relentless UV.  The reason for the heatwave was me buying an oven. Haven't had a working one for about 2 years so, naturally, I get one and it's salad time  ::)  ;D

Time to feed the hedgehogs :)

Traditional British summer weather: Wed/Thu - blazing sun, daytime high 30C, nighttime 'low' 20C; Fri - occasional downpours, but hot sun in between (high 26C); Today - more wet, more cool; Sun forecast - very wet, daytime 'high' 14C.

This change might be my fault, yesterday I finally got around to weeding under the rose arch so I can sit in the shade somewhere other than next to the compost bin. At least Joan will be able to play with her new oven.  ;D

Conditions here near Seattle are almost identical today.  Currently (9:15 AM) its 57 and forecast to be 61 at Noon.  It's 100% overcast and predicted to be so all day.

I went on a Volkssport walk near Bremerton on Monday and saw the ships at the Puget Sound Navy Shipyard from the highway.  It was a sunny 77 then.

Temperatures in Fahrenheit to be consistent with the ship logs.

We had three years of above average rainfall, and this year starter out above average. However, recently there hasn't been much rain.
Temperatures weren't too bad till this past week. It went up to 36C today (the forecast was 32 or 33).
The highs are supposed to be 32 or 33 till Friday, but the actual temperatures are almost always higher.
Saturday to Monday is supposed to rainy with highs of 27 or 28. I'll believe it when it happens ::)

Until the past week or two most lawns were a magnificent emerald green. Now most of them have straw-colored patches :'(

Today is a bit humid, but very pleasant temperature-wise.

Finally got bc here today after r, d, o and then some more r. But a pleasant high of 16C predicted.  I had to put my waterproofs on to go and water the tomatoes in the greenhouse a couple of times last week  ::). The joys of the British summer, but I still think I prefer that to 35C.

Yesterday was the first time this summer that I had to water the plants.  This is a few weeks later than usual.  There has been just enough occasional rain without too much heat to keep the plants happy.

We're in the middle of a hot stretch.  At 9:20 AM it's already 28.  The forecast high is 34, but it usually gets a few degrees warmer at my house.  So I'm expecting a high somewhere around 37.  Just a few days ago the high was 20.  The highest recorded since installing the weather station at the house a few years ago was 35.7.  So today may be a new high for my personal weather station.
