Hi Randi
Looking at starting Storis 1950.

Any specific details for this ship?
* Nautical Miles or Pat log miles as first pref?
* Course
XXX No need to click events button.
* Ice mentions in events

Nautical Miles are the first pref.
If that column is not filled in then Patent log if available.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by the rest.

As usual: Date, Distance (Nautical Miles), Course, Locations, Ice, Sailing Info

I've just logged in after a long rest of my eyes. I've been jumping through the Storis pages and I don't know if they're going far enough north to find any ice. I had that with the Rush. They stayed mainly south of Nome, and most of their time seemed to be spent ferrying teachers, doctors, nurses and so on around various communities in the Aleutians, the Panhandle and places south of Nome.

Stuart, I suggest you use the NARA link (https://catalog.archives.gov/id/38547952) and jump through the pages. You will see they spend a lot of time in ports, only six weather entries per day. If they do get far enough for ice then, by all means, we need to transcribe it. My eyes aren't quite up to it yet, though. Sorry.

When I was doing the ships on my own, I would use this link to figure out just when they left a US port for the north so I wasn't wasting time downloading pages that had no relevance.

Thanks Michael.
PM me when your eyes are better and I will contact you then if needed.

If any other ship is preferred then let me know now.

You may find ice. I see they start on Jan 1 in Kodiak, so you can get ice that far south. They end up in Juneau at the end of Dec. It should be quick to transcribe, they spend a lot of time in port.  :)

I'm doing November at request from Kevin, and noticed a few mentions of ice on the ship itself, but not in the sea:

Should those be transcribed as well?

Hi Hanibal

It won't hurt. It's usually a sign of low temperatures and high winds causing spray.

Many years ago we were on the ferry from Haines to Skagway around the end of December. It was very cold and very windy. My daughter, who would have been around ten, went out on the deck and the wind caught her and, with the decks being coated in ice, she was blown the length of the ship and only the guard rail kept her from going over the stern of the ship. I had a very hard time getting her back into the cabin because of the lack of footing.

Thanks for being thorough, Hanibal!

I would say, "Cool," but that wouldn't be appropriate. How about "Hot stuff!"

November done and uploaded.
No sea ice, but as I mentioned earlier, there was some icing on deck - and a report of volcanic activity!

I never knew you could get so far up that coast without venturing into open water.

I never knew you could get so far up that coast without venturing into open water.

There's a stretch of open water from the north end of Vancouver Island to the south end of the Inside Passage. It can be pretty rough and the waves and swells are coming at you broadside. The Wrangell Narrows and Seymour Narrows have to be navigated when the tides are just right: slack tide for the Seymour Narrows for all vessels and high tide for the Wrangell Narrows for larger vessels like the Alaskan State ferries.

Before they blew up Ripple Rock in the Seymour Narrows, that passage had to be run during high tide too.

I've done BC Ferries Port Hardy to Prince Rupert, and vice versa, two or three times, and the Alaska State ferries Prince Rupert - Skagway and Skagway - Bellingham. In winter the BC Ferries do the route at night, and during the summer they do the route during the day.

Any one of the routes is wonderful, if you go in the summer.
