April done and uploaded. Despite zipping around a lot, there was only one ice mention.
On to May.

May 1947 done. There was a LOT of ice on two pages, but almost nothing elsewhere.
June is a no-ice month, so July is my next target.

September done in one day - they spent a lot of time in port!
Only one ice mention though.

October is next - and after that, I will have to jump to 1953.

No, I'm just speedy.
Just like I was during Phases 1, 2 and 3.

And that's October done - they spent more than half the month in Boston, so it didn't take long.
But no ice for the whole month!

Now, I shall head to 1953 - but IIRC, we are only required to transcribe pages that have ice mentions because ice is ultra-rare for these years, correct?

Not sure if this helps...
As I understand it, Kevin wants to know when there was no ice mentioned as well as when there was ice mentioned (i.e., transcribe all voyages to Greenland).
As soon as you arrive in Boston, you can stop transcribing.

Michael is more up to date on the details, so he can tell you for certain.

Yes, do any voyages that get to Greenland, ice or no ice. Start when they leave the U.S. and stop when they get back to the U.S.  Kevin says knowing that there is no ice somewhere is also important. Of course, no evidence if ice is not necessarily evidence of no ice. But the ice people can sort all that out.

Okay, but what about the Alaskan Panhandle, the Aleutians or other places that are, according to the progress tracker, unlikely to have ice?

OK, for the Pacific side Kevin wanted voyages that went north of 55.  I was looking through the trackers for 1952, and most of them seem to be staying in the Juneau area to Dutch Harbor area. However, in August 1952 they went north of 70 and saw ice, but it hasn't been done. It looks like they start the month around Nome, run up to Point Barrow and then go back to Nome for the end of the month, so maybe do that one month.

We don't get a lot of feedback from Kevin, they are way behind us on their analysis. I think it makes sense to do voyages that have a chance of seeing ice, and then picking up the other ones later. The reason he went with 55 is that the ice extends much farther south on the western side (Siberian) of the Pacific than on the Alaskan side. This image (http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/files/1999/03/Figure1.png) shows the maximum ice extent for this winter.

I have no idea of what the voyages for 1953 on look like. Eastwind is in Greenland. Stuart is working away on her. I did process one year of her data.

Up to now I've processed over 77,000 hours, and there were over 5,000 reports of ice in that time. And it looks like you guys have got another 25 to 30,000 hours waiting for me to do. the Greenland voyages take me much longer to process because they spend so much time travelling up and down narrow fjords, and there aren't a lot of bearings or known points and few detailed historic maps. The Alaskan trips are much easier to process: no fjords, lots of bearing points, lots of historic navigational charts.

What I recommend is do what you think is best, given the ships and spreadsheets we have. I think Kevin will soon have us switch to Bear, Corwin and Thetis for times around 1900, but I'm not too sure.

Alright, thanks for the info.

According to the progress tracker spreadsheet, Stuart did August 1952. Did he not submit any XML? If so, I could do that month.

Okay, I've decided to work on January 1953 for now.
I will transcribe it the same way I transcribed all the 1940s months.
