Title: One for the bounty hunters
Post by: Maikel on 22 February 2013, 04:34:42
U.S.S. Yorktown

28-02-1890 Meridian to 4 p.m.: By order of Comdg. Officer offered a reward of 100 francs, for the apprehension and delivery on board this vessel within 3 months of E.J. Pearson (2.C.F.)

http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ow3/final/USS%20Yorktown/vol003of040_cr2_to_jpg/vol003of040_069_1.jpg (http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ow3/final/USS%20Yorktown/vol003of040_cr2_to_jpg/vol003of040_069_1.jpg)

The U.S.S. Yorktown was moored for almost two weeks in Villefrance, France and set sail the next afternoon for Spezia, Italy.

E.J. Pearson was found AWOL between 8 a.m. and noon, but no other reason has been given why the bounty was found necessary.

He must have done something severe, because the day before G.W. Farley (1.C.A.) was declared a deserter for being AWOL for ten days, and no bounty was set on his head.

I found that the bounty of 100 French francs in those days amounts to about $20.

On 11-03-1890 between 8 a.m. and meridian:

By order of Commanding Officer offered through the U.S. Consul a reward of 50 francs for the apprehension and delivery on board of W. Gerhart (Private).

He was brought on board by the local police (Livorno/Leghorn, Italy) between noon and 4 p.m.
No mention whether the police was paid the reward of about $10.

Since Commander asked assistance through US Vice-Consul (Emilio Masi (http://politicalgraveyard.com/bio/marwood-masloff.html#819.09.03)) we'll probably never know the answer ;)

I've found however a little article on an Italian 1890 newspaper (available from here: http://emerotecavirtualetoscana.siav.it/consulta_testata_calendario.asp?TestataRootNode=28551 - but the site has a terrible interface) about the arrival of Yorktown in Livorno (11 March, page 2, 3rd column):

Italian     English (rough translation)

Whilst moored in Castellamare, Italy, the by now infamous private W. Gerhart did a runner.

18-03-1890 4 to 8 a.m.:
Found catamaran missing after daylight and W. Gerhart (Pvt) absent from the ship without leave.

The catamaran was returned to the ship later that day.

Stumbled upon another reward whilst the U.S.S. Yorktown was at anchor in Gibraltar.

On 24-05-1890 between 8 a.m. and meridian 14 men were found absent without leave.
A reward of 2 pounds (sterling) was offered for their return.

In the afternoon 10 men, 4 between meridian and 4 p.m. and 6 between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m., were returned by the police, who were paid the promised reward.

The next day one man was returned at 11:30 by the police, who again received the 2 pounds reward.

You'll have to view both 24-05-1890 pages to see all mentioned.
The page was obscured by a list, and scanned twice.

Title: Re: One for the bounty hunters
Post by: Maikel on 10 April 2013, 14:25:46
Well, the captain is a F.E. Chadwick.
I don't know if he's such a hard man, or that it was just the spirit of the time, but every port that the U.S.S. Yorktown has visited, has seen AWOL ratings and quite a few deserters as well.

The list is starting to get endless.
If you take a look at the crew lists (http://forum.oldweather.org/index.php?topic=3411.0) I compile for each month, you'll see many ratings without extra information (such as transfers).
All these have been mentioned because they were AWOL or received punishment for other inappropriate behaviour.

Now that is a very interesting man.  I note that having that much talent and intelligence (genius?) does not make a good manager of crew.  That skill comes from a different facet of personality.

Yes, he seems to be a very reasonable man.
Maybe to reasonable to run a ship?

Or is it not his fault as one or more of the lieutenants have to keep the ship disciplined?

Silver or paper, it is a nice legal way for police officers to add to the salaries.  And it saves the city the cost of feeding the miscreants in the city jail.  :)

I'm pretty sure they weren't allowed to continue to enjoy their leave, since they were already written down as absentees without leave.

There just wasn't a reward offered for their return. :)

Paid to an official of the U.S. Consulate General a reward of 20 dollars (mex.) for the delivery on board of Wm. McDonald (C.P.).

Spurred on by that, a bit of research reveals that the Mexican Dollar was apparently quite widely accepted in the Far East (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_dollar#1821.E2.80.931897_Mexican_dollar), more so than the US Dollar. Would US ships have usually carried Mexican Dollars for use in Japan/China when sailing across the Pacific?

Turns out, they almost always carry Mexican coins in Asia - apparently too many merchants didn't know the conversion rate for US dollars, Mexican coins had been generated is sufficient quantity to become internationally known.

Yorktown's logs have mentioned several times receiving large sums, sometimes several 10,000s, of Mexican dollars for own use or for delivery to other ships.

I like to think it has to do with them leaving the ship on the 4th itself.
I've left out the twice daily list of absentees, but it still makes quite a list of prisoners and summary court martials.

04-07-1896:

Meridian to 4 p.m.:
The following men left the ship in sampans without permission: W. McDonald (F.2.C.); J.J. Connolley (A.1.C.);  C. Banson (2C. Q. master) and G. Fawcett (sea).

4 p.m. to 8 p.m.:
By order of Commanding officer confined G. Fawcett (sea) in double irons (drunk and disorderly) to await investigation.

8 p.m. to midnight:
By order of Commanding officer placed H. Rogers (sea); F. Allen (ap 2C.) and O. Gannon (F.2.C.) in double irons to await action for leaving the ship without permission and O. Gannon (F.2.C.) for smuggling liquor.

06-07-1896:

8 a.m. to meridian:
By order of Commanding officer F.A. Allen (app 2C.) and H. Rogers (sea) were placed in double irons to await trial by Summary Court Martial for leaving ship without permission, O. Gannon (F.2.C.) for the same offence and for smuggling liquor was also confined in double irons to await trial.
G. Fawcett (sea) was made prisoner at large until cell becomes available, then to be confined for 5 days in double irons on bread and water, for leaving ship without permission and M. McNamara (Ch.B.M.) was placed on fourth class for four months for being absent without leave.

Quite a profitable day for the Japanese police.   And I think they need to install additional brig space.  "Prisoner at large" does not sound very secure for men who have been absent without leave.

By order of Commanding Officer a reward of ten dollars each for delivery on board of Julius F Maton (Sea) Charles Mitchell (OS) and Horace Ammeman (Lds)
http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ow3/final/USS%20Thetis/vol008of024/vol008_093_1.jpg

Edit to add:
10 May 1889
The three above were declared deserters.

Issued a reward of $5.00 for the apprehension and delivery on board of A. Kaufman (OS)
http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ow3/final/USS%20Thetis/vol008of024/vol008_102_1.jpg

If I were Mr. Kaufman, would not come back simply because I would be offended by the low bounty placed on my head.

Another edit:
12 May 1889
A. Kaufman (OS) returned aboard 5 days overtime, dirty and sober.

First time I have seen reference to the physical condition of a returnee.

These sentences might partly answer the question whether the rewards came from their own money.

12-07-1896 - 8 a.m. to meridian:
Called all hands to muster and read findings and sentences of S.C.M. in the following cases - O. Gannon (F.2.C.), for leaving ship without permission and attempting to smuggle intoxicating liquor, "Solitary confinement in double irons on bread and water for 30 days with full ration every fifth day and to lose two month's pay", F. Allen (app 2C) for leaving ship without permission, "Solitary confinement in double irons on bread and water for 20 days with full ration every fifth day and to lose one month's pay"; W. McDonald (F.2.C.) for leaving ship without permission - "To be discharged from the U.S. Naval Service with a bad conduct discharge and to lose one month's pay."
By order of the Commanding officer all three prisoners were released from confinement and made prisoners at large.
