If you find crew lists, please post links to the pages here.
It isn't necessary to transcribe the names, but if you are willing to do so, we would appreciate it.
Entries in this topic are strictly optional.
Information collected here will help other transcribers, historians and genealogists.

This is from the book "Africa Squadron' The US navy while operating
off the coast of Africa often hired local natives refered to as kroomen
for shore supply runs and to help communicate with the locals. They were
also immune against tropical diseases. They were usually given
"American" names here are some on the jamestowns 1845-46 cruise: jack
Will, Ben Coffee, Poor Joe, Jack Everyday, Jack Frypan, and jack
Crowbar.
On the ships 1855-57 cruise: Jack Haultant, Pea Soup, After
Supper, Palm tree, Upside down, After breakfast, Fill Away, Flying Jib,
Brace Aback, Clear hawse, Hen Coop, Hard tack Bow Gun, Port Anchor, Tar
Bucket, last One, and Peter Jarmen. The last named died and was buried
at sea.
I hope this is of some interest.

These guys are mentioned in the logs, and some more. Saw them a while ago.

The Kroomen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krumen_people)are
from a specific ethnic group on the west coast of Africa, exactly where
the Jamestown was patrolling. As are the Seedies.

Jamestown January 1 1848 List of Officers

WOW!!! Is that ever elegant!
-
Yeah, I was very briefly thinking of looking for the appropriate font to transcribe it ;D
Now, here is the list of officers reporting for duty 13 July 1847
http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ow3/final/USS%20Jamestown/vol003of067/vol003of067_004_1.jpg
-
It looks like he is just warming up there ;)
-
I looked ahead and it doesn't seem like they get out to sea until 25
Sept 1847. The log book begins 13 July 1847. During that time they went
from Boston to Norfolk. So, all we get is Remarks with wind direction,
wind strength and weather conditions for about 10 weeks.

July 3, 1845, 2 other crew (I assume) mentioned by name in the last entry:
Jat. Land Appt'd Boy and John Holmes went on liberty
http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ow3/final/USS%20Jamestown/vol001of067/vol001of067_109_1.jpg
I'm unsure about that first name!
-
Hi camiller,
I'd say the logkeeper used the superscripted form Jas for James or a similar name (this site mentions Jacobus too: http://broadrunit.com/RootsWeb/NameForms.html)
-
Oh, that makes sense! Thanks.

Several other Apprentice Boys:
Viz. Daniel Bishop What does Viz. mean?
Rich'd Johnson
G T Hill or is it G J Hill?
Tho's Jones
and
Ja's E Land We know his middle initial now!
see answer at http://forum.oldweather.org/index.php?topic=3513.msg74422#msg74422
-
I think it is the following:
Viz. (also rendered viz without a
period) and the adverb videlicet are used as synonyms for "namely",
"that is to say", and "as follows".
Craig, Matteo (a.k.a.
Propriome, a moderator for this board) doesn't mind questions/comments
in the original post with names, but gets fussy about replies
interrupting the reading of the lists. I do my best to honor folks
who make our moderator lives easier. See how I answered this at

The afternoon after the ship leaves port, and several lashes, ratings, and disratings, with the names of several crew:
http://oldweather.s3.amazonaws.com/ow3/final/USS%20Jamestown/vol001of067/vol001of067_112_0.jpg
I've
bolded names not in the crew list. Is W'm Fanly = Fanley?
Is Bargemen a rank or last name? No other ranks given in this
section.
"Punished the following ment with one dozen with the
cats each John Bennet & Moses Toppan for smugling liquor James
Beddinger for fighting & drunkenness W'm Evens for drunkenness, fighting, abusive Language & Biting. H. F. Hines for being drunk noisy Mutinous & Abusive. Vincent C Grand & W'm Fanly being Drunk on duty. W'm Beverage & John Skyles Bargemen for leaving the boat without permission & J~'d Fletcher for leaving the ship without permission"
"Rated & disrated the following men John Crofts Q. Master to coxswain, John Glover Cap't Top. to Q. Master Amos Sterns Sea. to Cap't. Fore Top. Disrated John Conyers Coxswain to Sea."
-
I would say Bargemen is a last name. A google search turned up several people with that name.

A death among the Krooman, with no mention of cause:

"Ordinary seaman
was the second-lowest rank of the 19th century United States Navy,
ranking above landsman and below seaman. Promotion from landsman to
ordinary seaman required three years of experience or re-enlistment. An
ordinary seaman who gained six years of experience and "knew the ropes",
that is, knew the name and use of every line in the ship's rigging,
could be promoted to seaman. An ordinary seaman's duties aboard ship
included "handling and splicing lines, and working aloft on the lower
mast stages and yards."
Sergeant is "A noncommissioned rank in the U.S. Army or Marine Corps that is above corporal and below staff sergeant."
"In the U.S. Marine Corps, private (PVT)
only refers to the lowest enlisted rank, just below private first
class. A Marine Corps private wears no uniform insignia and is sometimes
described as having a "slick sleeve" for this reason. Most new,
non-officer marines begin their military career as a private. In the
Marine Corps, privates first class are not referred to as "privates"; It
is more appropriate to use either "private first class" or "PFC"."

This type of punishment goes on regularly until about 1850 or 1851,
Camillier. After that, they are put in irons and fed only bread and
water. I guess the navy decided that, in addition to being sadistic,
flogging did nothing to correct bad behaviour.
-
That's good to know, Craig! I only have a sample size of 2,
but do the ships generally reserve these punishments for the afternoon
that they leave port? Presumably there are some drunk crew during
the weeks that they are in port.
I posted the quote for the crew
mentioned. So sad that the only way we learn of some crew members
is when they are mentioned in the log for punishment, at least from what
I can see.
-
I think that is a common occasion for flogging, Camiller, but it
often happens at sea - cases of insubordination, pilfering rum, falling
asleep on watch duty and disputes between the crew members. The highest
number of cats was 50, I think. Must have been horrible!
-
:(
-
All us modern readers hate their forms of punishment, but having
loved reading Hornblower stories in high school, I wasn't
surprised. 1844 is significantly before the USN decided to agree
with us and ban flogging on their ships.

A very precise reading. I'm wondering how intense the "abuse"

very poorly thought of.

Scotch-Irish protestants who created the Appalachian culture and were

It's up to you. What you are doing is good, but if you prefer to only list people not previously mentioned that is fine too.
These
crew lists are a new idea and they are optional, so we are all figuring
out how to handle them. Some people get really detailed and some people
don't record anything.
I like to have each person mentioned at least once, and I can easily add links to other pages where the person is mentioned.
If you want to, we can come up with a new system to record more information. ;D
-
I like the crew list with links, and will be happy to post whatever
makes it easier for you to maintain it. Sometimes I "relist" a
crew because I seem to remember a request (years ago) to post mentions
of punishments, or other interesting info about the crew and figured
this was the place to do it. Other times, I just can't remember if
I've seen the name already!
-
I think the key thing is to transcribe the details. The transcriptions will be 'permanent'.
The
information here will certainly be useful for fellow transcribers and
editors, but I don't know how long it will remain accessible.
How much you do is really up to you.
You can just do the name and link (and even that is optional!). You
might want to add the details only when they are especially interesting.

By 1866 flogging is no longer permitted.
"charged with absence without leave and drunkenness"
"sentenced

it does look as if the anchor may have come in with the launch the
transfers left in.

That one really got to me! The scribe put periods in weird places and then none where I'd expect them. :P
By
the way, Randi, if you have any suggestions or preferences for the way
I'm adding crew names, please let me know or feel free to edit as
you please.

I'd be inclined to go with
Last name, First name
I think that is a little easier to read?
I WILL be back soon ;)
(but I'm going to stop transcribing the entire events page :()
Right now I'm trying to put a bit of life into the 1879 Discussion topic.

Aug. 7, 1846, Boston
The first party sent on liberty after
arrival in Boston is very interesting: the ship's corporal; fifer;
4 seamen never mentioned in the logs (as we have recorded in this
topic) implying they hadn't been punished, at least; and a seaman who
had been knocked overboard and recovered.

Sent the following Men in charge of Lieut. Wilmer Shields. on board the ship "Florence" for a passage to the United States.

August 23, 1847, while the ship was in dry dock in Norfolk, VA - :o
On
the Meridian to 8 pm watch Joseph Sawyer, Nelson Browne, Lewis Smith,
and Samuel Simmons "deserted the yard by jumping the wall"
At
10.30 pm "Police brought on board Lewis Smith (Sea'n) Samuel S Simmons
(O.S.) Nelson Browne (O.S.) and Joseph Sawyer (Sea.) Deserters.
Configned them in Double Irons. "
-
That was a short trip - I wonder what kind of mayhem they were
perpetrating, that they caught the attention of the cops this soon?
-
Yes, I was wondering that same thing. There didn't seem to be a
bounty involved, so the police must have been keeping order!
-
Sept. 9, 1847, as the ship is preparing to leave Norfolk/dry dock:
"received a Draft of 15 Sam'n 10 O.S. and 5 Las. and 1 first class Boy, from the Pennsylvania. -"
I assume that the first group of crew is supposed to be "Seamen."

McKeever, Isaac (Commodore)
About
this time Commodore Isaac McKeever, in his flagship Congress, arrived
at Montevideo where he received dispatches from the American Charge' de
Affaires, John S. Pendleton, at Buenos Ayres, acquainting him with the
state of affairs in that city. Commodore McKeever felt that his presence
at the latter place was urgently needed, and that probably additional
Marines might be necessary if a landing be required for the protection
of the interests of the United States. Accordingly, he ordered the
Marine Guard of the Congress, under Brevet Captain Algernon S. Taylor
and Second Lieutenant George Holmes, to proceed to Buenos Ayres. The
Commodore also sailed for that city, and, upon arrival, transferred his
pennant to the Jamestown which was lying in the harbor off Buenos Ayres
at the time.
...
The Marines of the Jamestown were commanded by Second Lieutenant John R. F. Tattnall

Probably:
Warley
was fiery and impetuous, a good combat commander but not always a good
subordinate (as his multiple pre-war courts-martial attest). He was also
very in tune with his fellow South Carolinians; when he went on duty
with the Mediterranean Squadron in late 1860, he left a pre-written
resignation letter with his congressman, to be delivered the day after
South Carolina seceded, and he returned home in early 1861 in time to
command a battery of guns on the approaches to Charleston before and
during the Fort Sumter bombardment.

Langford Howard Newman is one of our log keepers!
Washington Irving and the U.S. Navy
Quite
a number of years ago the Museum was given a collection of naval papers
pertaining to the Newman family. William D. Newman (ca. 1800-1844) and
his sons, Langford Howard Newman (1830-1866) and William Bogert Newman
(1834-1912) were all U.S. Navy officers. William met a tragic death in
1844, but his sons went on to follow him into naval service. Last year a
second gift of papers was given to bolster the collection, adding new
information about the family. Additionally, the Museum was able to
purchase a letter written by Washington Irving in 1847 asking New York
Congressman Moses H. Grinnell to arrange an appointment to midshipman
for seventeen-year old Langford. Irving had previously attained the same
appointment from Grinnell for Langford's father, William. In a snippet
from his letter to Grinnell, Irving points out the specifics of the
matter regarding William and his son:
"His [William's] melancholy
end you may recollect when in command of the UStates Brig Bainbridge at
MonteVideo. It is supposed he drowned himself from a too morbid
sensibility to his professional reputation; apprehending he might incur
popular reproach for his conduct in a transaction in which his superior
officer acquitted him of all blame. He left a family with, I
apprehend, but very moderate means; I heard there were, I believe, three
or four boys, who when I visited him some few years since appeared to
be in excellent training. I now come to the point of this long
story. It is to interest you in favor of his eldest son, about
seventeen years of age, apparently a very fine lad, who had recently
finished his studies and is bent upon a sea faring life. I have
applied for a midshipmans appointment for him; but as vacancies are rare
and applications many, and as in nine months he will be past the limits
as to age (18 years) exacted in such appointments, I fear his chance as
to success is but small."
The Museum also owns the letter from
Langford to Irving requesting this action from the famous author.
Langford did indeed get appointed and served aboard a number of ships
before, during and just after the Civil War. Unfortunately, he died at
an even younger age than his father while in command of the U.S.S. NYACK
while the ship was patrolling the west coast of South America in 1866,
protecting the interests of Americans during Spain's conflict with Peru
and Chile over the Chincha Islands. He was not yet 36 years old.
