Took a lot to work out this word in the log. polynya.

Never seen the word before.

Looking for the correct spelling I did find this great resource for ice terms.
 Ice terms (https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/ice-forecasts-observations/latest-conditions/glossary.html)

Thanks - added to Sea Ice (http://forum.oldweather.org/index.php?topic=3432.0)

However, polynya is already listed there ;)

If the Eastwind (and often the Northwind) are doing official ice hunting voyages who has the records and why are we/I repeating them?

 ???

I don't where the records are. The voyages don't always coincide. I was doing Storis and every now and then she and Northland were sailing together, and then one of them went off in a different direction for a few days before meeting up again.

What i meant was who has the official Coast Guard Survey records not the ships log records

Interesting entry in Eastwinds log.
0822 KA107-7 alongside to port to return Eastwinds garbage cans.

That was nice of them I have walk down to the gate to get mine.

[I think KA107 is the USS Vermilion cargo ship]

The city takes ours to the curb, but we have to return them once they are emptied. They used to take and return them, but cutbacks...  ;D

16 August 1952 (https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/media/24339179/content/dc-metro/rg-026/559642/0001-A1/Eastwind-WAG-279-1952/Eastwind-WAG-279-1952_0460.JPG)

Quote
2200: Reached 82 38 20N, 61 51W. Mushroom Point 223T, 12,900yds These? Point 193T, 11,600yds Cape Rawson 175T, 17,500yds Black Cape 171T 25,300yds Feilden Peninsula 323T 20.6 mi Cape Richardson 237T, 24,500yds. Set record Northing for this vessel under own power.

Using the Natural Resources Canada lat/longs I get the following:

Code: [Select]
82.5776 -61.3456 Mushroom Point
82.6765 -61.6103 Cape Richardson
82.564 -61.3781 Black Cape
82.5602 -61.3451 Cape Rawson
82.594575 -61.419775 Average

With the average of the four points being: 82o35'40" -61o25'11".

This is a bit southeast of their given position: 82 38 20N, 61 51W. The error is 4.3 miles.  This is probably due to map errors, I've noticed a few on the voyages up here. Sometimes a logged Lat/Long puts them a couple of miles on the wrong side of the high tide line.  ;)

I suspect his Thesen Point is really Mann Point, taking back bearings from his average position. NR Can ID OAKIL, position: 82.4833330, -61.6500000. But there is no evidence of that.
