Here's to our triumphs in 2017, and to more in the coming year!

Why the new year starts on Jan. 1
(https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2015/12/31/why-the-new-year-starts-on-january-1-a-terrible-time-for-renewal/?utm_term=.c569f13db368)
Along
with the American colonies, Britain used the Julian calendar and
observed New Year's Day on March 25, Lady Day, also known as the Feast
of the Annunciation. It wasn't until 1752 when the Brits gave in to the
Gregorian calendar and changed the New Year's Day to Jan. 1.

Happy New Year to everyone!

Happy New Year everyone.
I didn't hear any bad news from all you who got to January 1 before me, so I decided to come along for the ride. ;)

What is the earliest New Year's Day logbook poem that has been found by OW so far?

Thanks for posting that article!
I don't know what the earliest one is.

If anybody needs a break from the cold weather of Ice Hunting, come to my place. 34.4792? S, 150.4181? E
Currently 42.5C on my veranda and has risen 2C in the last hour.
Penrith (west of Sydney) beat its record by 0.1C 0.3C at 47.1C just now 47.3C @ 15:00.
P.S. Just bought my first Hot Cross Buns for this season.
-
:o I just can't imagine 42.5, I have to go and lie down in a
darkened room when it gets near to 30C. -3C here this morning and
looking pretty and frosty, definitely prefer that.
On the plus side, presumably you could toast your hot cross bun on the veranda!
-
Meanwhile, we currently have -31 C. We might get up slightly above
zero on Thursday. With the windchill factor yesterday it it was -38 C
during the day. Needless to say, I didn't go out for a walk.
-
We've just had a couple of lovely bright days with the temp below
zero. During the day only just below and since the roads were dry when
the frost came it is actually quite pleasant for those of us who can
afford the right food, clothing and enough heating. My commiserations to
those whose conditions are so much more challenging.

Well, we just dodged the big one. There was a 7.9 magnitude
earthquake near Chiniak, Alaska
(http://www.geonames.org/5859247/chiniak-island.html) which triggered
tsunami warnings along the west coast. Fortunately no big wave was
generated. Also, on a personal note, we live at an elevation of 76
metres, so there is no risk of a tsunami reaching us. :)
Sirens
in the tsunami zone went off, and text alerts were sent to mobile
phones. Also, emergency personnel such as fire fighters and police went
door to door in some of the areas that were most vulnerable.
All this excitement, and we slept right through it!

Earlier today, I found out that Firefox has released a LOT of security patches:
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/01/24/mozilla_firefox_security_updates/
I highly recommend upgrading, even if you don't use Firefox most of the time.
To upgrade, click on the main menu (for me, it's in the upper right corner), click on "Help" and choose "About Firefox".
That starts the updating process.
But
first, make sure you're not busy writing a forum post or anything, as
you will have to restart Firefox to complete the installation.
-
Thanks for the warning!
I'll do it as soon as I save this post ;)
-
Thank you hanibal - I use it a fair bit so I'll get sorted with the patches :)
-
Thanks for this, hanibal - I use Firefox all the time, so did it straight away.
-
You're welcome, everyone!
Also: Google just released version
64 of Chrome, which includes security patches for Meltdown and Spectre,
plus better protection from malware disguised as ads.
Upgrading is as
simple as with Firefox: Open the main menu, (for me, it's in the upper
right corner), click on "Help" and choose "About Google Chrome".
That starts the update process.
I just installed it, and again, I highly recommend everybody who has Chrome do it too, even if it's not your main browser.

A wise decision!
I like to update it manually as soon as I hear about fixes, to make sure it's done.
Last
time you let us know about updates I went and checked, and they hadn't
yet been done, so I did it manually that time. But as I'm far less
likely than you to be aware there's anything to be done, having it set
to do itself seems the safest option. But having an expert on hand
to alert us to important ones is very useful! ;D
-
Hanibal, do you know if any of these updates to Firefox have fixed
the security problem? My limited understanding is that the basic design
of this search engine makes it impossible to protect sensitive
information by sequestering it in a so-called "sand box". Other browsers
such as IE and Chrome provide this protection. This is why I tend to do
most of my searches with chrome and only use Firefox for trusted sites
like OW.

It
looks like Firefox has been using sandboxing since version 54 (the
newest is 58):
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/06/14/firefox_54_multiple_content_processes_debut/
However,
it's hard to tell whether it's more secure than Chrome or vice versa,
as they both have other features (Chrome also uses site isolation, but
Firefox supposedly does better on removing/preventing malicious
extensions).
Best to play it safe and keep updating 'em both.
P.S. Firefox is a Internet browser, not a search engine. Sorry for nitpicking, but I can't ignore that.

One of those funny things. John Danenhower https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Wilson_Danenhower was the navigator on the Jeannette.
His grandson (son of his daughter Ruth) was Sloan Wilson

on the Greenland Patrol (USCGC Tampa, and the armed trawler Nogak). He

Yesterday was "Patch
Tuesday", the day where Microsoft, Adobe and others typically release a
lot of fixes for their stuff - and this month was no exception!
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/02/14/patch_tuesday_microsoft_adobe/
This
time, we got patches for Windows, Outlook, MS Office and some other
stuff, along with Adobe Reader and Acrobat - with the latter two, the
versions for MacOS are also affected!
As always, get the fixes ASAP.
-
I'll watch for the patches coming through hanibal - thanks for the
heads up. I love the idea of getting Pancake Tuesday mixed up with
Patches Tuesday. We've issued Adobe pancakes with lemon and sugar,
Microsoft pancakes with warm syrup, and Acrobat with chocolate and
hazelnut spread. We'll wait to see how eating Windows and Outlook
patches with raspberry sauce goes down...... ;D
-
Hi Joan.
I nose were yous live, look out next shrove Tuesday I could be knocking at your door.
-
We may not be able to help next year - the house might have fallen
down Stuart - we just got a very obvious earthquake! I was sat at the
table and felt it shaking - things rattled in the kitchen! Rona
came in from her room having seen the clothes wobbling around on the
drier. I guess if we made the pancakes the right tremor might flip them
for us?!
Glad you know where we lives Stuart - any time you want
to pop round and enjoy the natural shake of the earth - you're very
welcome :D :D ;D
~~~~~~~~
Just got a message from a friend in
Bristol - might have been closer to the epicentre - their whole flat
shook and it sounds worse than our flat shake.
Turns
out that the epicentre was the Bristol Channel. So here's Monmouth's
Hi Joan.
:o Wow I did not know Britain had big earthquakes till I just looked it up.
I guess you can say The earth moved for you and mean it. ::)
Glad that it seems to have limited damage.
-
I blame the Scots - half of their mountains are ex-volcanoes (bit of
an exageration) and I think this must attract the earthquakes in
;) ;D
-
I think the Highlanderss are just shaky on their feet from toooo
much Scotch and that movement is moving down the Pennines Range to
England. ;)
-
Joan:
Glad to hear you are safe!!
Hope that is also true of the rest of our UKers!! ;)
Yes, probably mine too. And tomorrow I think the highest temperature we're going to reach is -2 .... brrrr!
4 inches of rain on one day (a few days ago) and now 29 degrees. Nice.
-6.5C at around 7am this morning. A bit warmer in the sun now
(-1.2), although it's also snowing gently even though there don't seem
to be any clouds ??? It is very pretty, if you don't need to travel
anywhere.
Meanwhile
in Blighty we've become so worried about the big blue band on the right
Well, up to yesterday we were going to miss the worst of it. Today
it is not funny. :( I'm not sure if we are actually on red alert
or still on 'high' amber. Glasgow Airport, just down the road, is
currently closed having reopened briefly after the morning runway
clearance. Good thing I'm an old fashioned type and have enough tinned
& packet food to give me a boring but adequate diet for the next few
days even if the power lines go down so I can't get at the stuff in the
freezer. Don't fancy it though, I have a weakness for fresh food from
time to time. Our latest heavy snow shower has now eased off and its
brightening up again :)
-
Glad
to hear that, though the news just now mentioned Glasgow Airport as
shut. You've got the highest alert with that red bubble over the
Edinburgh-Glasgow area. :-\
-
Glad to hear you're doing OK, Rosemary!
It's been chilly in
Germany too. Temperatures this week are from -5 to -13 C, similar to
last week, but it's supposed to get better on the weekend - up to around
8 C.
At least there's been a lot of sunshine. That makes it feel not quite so bad.
The forecast says rain tomorrow and snow the next day...
-
At my house in Victoria the high was 9C the low 5C no rain, cloudy
and windy with gusts to 34 kmh. The forecast is for intermittent rain
over the next 48 hours with little change in temperature. All in all
it's not very pleasant, but it could be a lot worse.
-
What is snow?
It's been that long since I've seen it. :(
Thinking of going to Harbin (China) for the ice festival in Jan 2019. Hope there is snow there.
-
The snow has come back a few times since my last post. No buses, no
trains, no planes and the sort of lovely powdery snow which blows all
over the place. I don't know how much we've had, some of the roofs are
almost bare but the back door, which normally has 2 steps down to the
path with a raised garden on the other side of it now opens on to the
snow but the wind tends to blow the snow over the path.
The news said
that there were cars stuck on one of the city motorways with an
estimated clearane time of 4-5 hours. One poor motorist had gone
about 2 miles in 2 hours. The problem is that they send the snow ploughs
out and the ones we use don't compact the snow that much so it just
blows back behind the plough. Our usual snow is much wetter and sticks
quite easily.
We are on red alert till tomorrow morning then I think
we go to amber for a few hours then down to yellow. They keep changing
their minds though. I hope we get a thaw rather than wash the snow away
with rain otherwise we'll have problems with flooding. My house
shouldn't be at serious risk but the roads could be bad. Hope the rest
of you are better situated.
-
School was closed today in the North of England. Had some fun
sledging on a bright but cold day. Snowing heavily again
now. It has probably been 10 years since our last significant
snow.
-
Sounds like fun Hurlock! :D
Very very cold here but no snow yet. :D
-
We have a red warning in Devon, too. Lots of snow
:( At least I am in a city, must be dreadful up on Dartmoor - I do
hope we get some milder weather soon!
-
Good luck. We're still minus buses although we may get some
tomorrow. Glasgow Airport is still closed, they hope (again) to open up
tomorrow. There are a few trains running down the coast line but the
rest of the lines round the central belt are off. If, like me, you are
retired and well-stocked then it's inconvenient but if you are in work
with an unsympathetic employer it must be hell. It's difficult for
nurses etc too, however they've cancelled most of the routine clinics
and elective surgery so they've got some flexibility. Keep warm and stay
safe.
-
Just watching a documentary about the Great Freeze of 1963. A
quarter of all our birds in the UK died during January and February
1963. I worked from home today - way to treacherous to go out. That
meant being able to spend a bit of time making up some more fat balls.
Mealworms, niger seed, sunflower seed, smashed up peanuts and hedgehog
crunchies, chopped raisins that were living at the back of the cupboard.
And tip toeing out to put fresh water out - about 6 times. The stuff
was freezing so quickly. Very little snow on my path - it simply blew
past without touching the floor. :-[
-
I'm a couple hundred klicks north of Randi. We are due for 15 - 30cm
snow overnight. Earlier this week we were looking at temps in the
15 - 18? C range! :o
-
Windy!
-
I suppose conditions are improving but the buses are by-passing the
village so 20 min walk to bus stop or dig out car. I can probably get
out of the bottom of the village but the buses use a bus link at the top
of the hill which, needless to say, has not been ploughed or gritted.
No trains this morning, no mainline trains or replacement buses between
Glasgow & England. Still, at least we didn't get any noticeable snow
last night so could be worse. The first day of Spring didn't feel
exactly spring-like. Believe it or not, climate warming affecting the
upper atmosphere is being blamed for our cold snap, apparently it
influences the jet stream but I didn't catch the whole of the
explanation on the radio program.
-
We thankfully have rain forecast for overnight with temperatures
about to go above freezing! Currently I would struggle to get to
the garage, let alone get the car up the sloping driveway! But
hopefully the snow will all be gone by Monday and normal life can
resume. Having spent a lot of time looking at weather forecasts
over the last few days, it has become clear that there are big
discrepancies between the Met Office forecasts and those on BBC Weather
as supplied by the new contractor. It's also become very clear
that the Met Office forecasts are way more accurate than BBC Weather - I
have lodged a complaint with the BBC!
-
Yes, the forecasts. For us in Canada, Environment Canada wanted
people who could think and reason to do the weather forecasts. The radio
stations wanted someone who would sound good, the TV stations wanted
someone who would both look good and sound good. For a long time they
would use the weather forecasts provided by Environment Canada, but then
they wanted to differentiate themselves from other media so they would
have their own people doing the forecasts. The results are obvious...
-
Unfortunately, the BBC were mainly looking for someone who would do
it cheaper than the Met Office. It's beginning to look like
accuracy wasn't a big priority.
Too
true! I can't believe the BBC stuff - it's so often wrong
compared to the Met Office. I was sorry to lose the Rainfall radar
because that's such a help for getting around. I hope they fix it soon.
:)
Ahhh,
I should have remembered the BBC were going to change when I spotted
that the BBC forecast kept saying it wasn't going to snow here and then
it did. Met Office has been much more accurate.
There is a petition to the UK Parliament calling for the remains of
recovered from the anonymous mass grave in Indonesia in which they were
dumped by metal scavengers. You have to be a British citizen or a
Do you have Twitter blocked? That's where the image is hosted.
That is odd - maybe it's some strange error that only affects those
who have a deactivated, but not deleted, Twitter account?
I just
checked: Twitter keeps your data for 30 days after deactivation, only
then does it actually delete everything, which can take up to a week.
If you log back in during those 30 days, your account will automatically be restored.
-
I never had Twitter and I see the picture :-\
-
Yes, as Hanibal says, it seems to only affect those who are in
the 30 day weaning period. I will cancel again and give it a full
month.
Thanks
for the tip about browser console, Hanibal94. I didn't know what it
was. Here's what it shows when I am on the chat page with the image:
(https://imgur.com/99esLqy.png)
So
that explains why it is only Firefox that is hiding the image. I
usually use Firefox for the Forum but I must have used Chrome after I
cancelled my Twitter account. I turned tracking off in Firefox and saw
the image. So it has nothing to do with the status of my Twitter
account.
Craig
You
may know this but you can easily exempt a site from tracking protection
in Firefox while allowing it to be in effect generally. There is a
little symbol that appears in the URL window for a site when something
is hidden because of tracking protection. You can click on that symbol
and add the site to the exemption list. I have exempted OW.
Nice job working it out, Craig!
What a wonderful lecture. Arnold Brower Jr is about 5'2", looks
school in Sitka, 1100 miles south of Barrow. When he came north and was
about 14 his dad appeared and hauled him out of class because it was
about time for him to learn how to provide food for his community.
At that time he had never heard of global warming, until ten years ago
he didn't think it existed, now he believes it without doubt.
I'll
write a full report tomorrow evening. I was utterly impressed by the
expertise that Brower had taught himself. His grasp on the science and
politics is excellent. Just like any country leader.
So more to come :) It was a really engaging talk. But very sobering to be honest.
-
The Browers go back to the old whaling days in Utqigvik, as you
probably know. There's a book by Charlie Brower - 50 years below zero:
https://archive.org/details/fiftyyearsbelowz006297mbp
-
8) ;)
-
I wonder if that was Arnold's father? That's a fascinating book - I
know what my next read will be. Oops -left my notes at work so I'll tidy
up tomorrow :(
-
You can be the first to write a review of 50 years below zero, Joan.
-
Ah - I'll take the challenge :D
Back in a mo to finish that report - feeding hedgehogs first :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When
whaling was banned the Inuit still fed themselves on a few whales each
year. The Inuit at Barrow contested the numbers of whales quoted at that
time as between 200 and 600 animals. They developed a 'traditional
plan' to support themselves. They also developed a system of using three
hydrophones to triangulate each migrating whale in their area. Cornell
University assisted with the final production of data, and proof of how
well the system worked. The number of whales was shown to be around
4000. The Inuit proposed to take 68 per year as a maximum. That should
still allow numbers of whales to increase. In Brower's area they need 12
whales to support 11 villages. If they cannot take whales they have to
hunt more walrus and caribou.
Dr Dalee Durrough worked with the
Inuit to write a paper to the International Whaling Convention
Aboriginal Subsistence Working Group to show how very different their
type of whaling is compared to commercial whaling. A suitable area on
the sea ice but close to the shore is used to kill and haul the whale
out for butchering and storage. Nothing is wasted. Whales are very
sensetive to sound so the whalers wear soft clothing. When an
international group of (?)politicians arrived they work dark clothes and
stomped around and talked loudly. So a kill could not be made.
In
recent years the problem of thinning sea ice is making this form of
whaling so much harder, in fact two whales were lost by falling through
the sea ice after being killed.
Already whales are arriving
earlier than usual due to temperatures rising. They used to have the
safety of the sea ice to protect them from orcas (who only use clear
water). As the sea ice retreats the orcas can kill more whales each
year. Often the kill is the slower animals, mothers and dependent
babies.
The whalers used fresh water run off from glaciers for their
drinking water until recently. The glaciers are no longer able to
supply that level of water.
A new source of meat is salmon which is now able to live as far north as Barrow due to the climate warming.
A
study was made of the age of the whales and it was found that some had a
dark line of matter in their baleen. This proved to be from the outfall
from the Hiroshima bomb.
As the bowheads migrate they rise up under
sea ice a metre thick and push it until it cracks thus allowing them to
make a blowhole. Beluga whales tag along behind to use the same
blowholes.
A Good Neighbour Scheme has been set up with
companies like Exxon, Conico, Shell, who compensate the traditional
peoples for the problems caused by climate change. A recent new problem
was the warming of the soil. The underground cellars dug into the
permafrost to house the whale meat have begun to implode because the
soil is de-frosting. Special machinery to re-freeze the ice is provide
by the big oil companies who are dealing with the same problem affecting
their rigs' foundations.
There were endless lists of differing
authorities involved in this part of the world. Brower has to deal with
all of those. I was left with a sense of awe at the changing times that
he has lived through and the impressive way in which he has engaged with
all of those changes. Leaving school to go whaling and now travelling
to Rome with his laptop to speak to another set of scientists. Brower's
determination to engage with the world to support his community is
inspiring indeed.
-
Nice report Joan. Thanks
-
Indeed!
-
Thanks Joan - he sounds a very impressive person. We need to
listen to the communities who are on the front line of these disputed
questions.
-
Thank you for an excellent summary, Joan.

Watch what you say
One
recent scheme involves getting consumers to say "yes" and later using a
recording of the response to allow unauthorized charges on the person's
credit card account, the F.C.C. warned in March.
When the caller
asks, "Can you hear me?" and the consumer answers "yes," the caller can
gain a voice signature that can later be used to authorize fraudulent
charges by telephone.
Best to answer with "I can hear you," said Ryan
Kalember, senior vice president of cybersecurity strategy at
Proofpoint, a cybersecurity company in Sunnyvale, Calif.

I
have to admit to not being as nice as that. Cold callers get 'Why are
you calling me?' as my first comment. If they followed up with 'Can you
hear me?' I'd probably go with 'I shouldn't be able to'. I feel so sorry
for people who have to work in those centres :(

I'm with you, annoyed at the calls, and feeling sorry for the callers. It must be a miserable job.

For everybody on Windows 10: I just installed version 1803 (the
biannual mega-update)
(https://www.zdnet.com/pictures/whats-new-in-windows-10-version-1803-the-spring-creators-update/18/),
and have some advice for those who still need to do it.
BEFORE:
Check
if your computer has any SSDs (solid state drives), and if so, what
brand, because there have been problems reported with certain ones from
Intel:
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/05/10/windows_10_intel_ssd_incompatibility/
First,
see what types of drives you have:
https://www.howtogeek.com/202810/how-do-you-determine-which-type-of-drive-hdd-or-ssd-you-have-with-windows-8/
If there are any SSDs, you can use this tool to get the brand info: https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy
(The
free version is fine, but it seems to install another app called
CCleaner - you can just remove that, as it has nothing to do with
Speccy)
Also: You will receive a popup
(https://www.zdnet.com/pictures/whats-new-in-windows-10-version-1803-the-spring-creators-update/2/)
when your computer is ready to install - however, this popup appears
without warning and immediately puts itself in the foreground, thus
interrupting whatever you were doing!
(I was playing a computer game
when I got it, and it interrupted THAT - fortunately, the game paused
itself and I was able to keep playing after clicking "Remind me later")
AFTER:
When you log in for the first time after installation, it will ask you about several privacy settings.
I
recommend choosing No in each case, except diagnostic data, as you
can't fully stop Microsoft from processing that - all you can do is set
it to "Basic".
Then, go to your privacy settings (opening the Start
menu and typing "Privacy" should do the job), and go through all the
tabs on the left - some of these will have been turned on!
Again,
turn them all off, except for "Camera" and "Microphone", which are
required by Skype - but you can stop other apps from using those.
Also,
some apps might be automatically deactivated if they are not compatible
with the new version of Windows - in my case, I got it for Intel WiDi
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiDi), which has been discontinued, so I
uninstalled it.
Compatibility issues like this are pretty rare, but
if it happens, and it's something you want to keep, check the
manufacturer's website and see if they have a newer version of the app.
Finally,
keep an eye on your computer's behavior over the next few days - if
something really bad happens, you can revert to the previous version of
Windows, but only within 10 days after updating. Then it's no
longer possible.
But despite all this, it is still worth
updating, as each update does generally include some useful new things -
this one enables password recovery via security questions for local
(non-Microsoft) accounts!
Plus, Microsoft will not support the old
versions forever - so if you want to keep getting security fixes, you
gotta stay up-to-date.

Question.
Does anybody know what this refers to. 31 July 1950.
1524, Half masted colors in mourning for canadian pilots, crew members and civilians lost at ?Alert?

-
On 31 July 1950, seven Royal Canadian Air Force (405 [Maritime
Reconnaissance] Squadron) crew members and two civilian passengers
aboard an RCAF Lancaster aircraft died in a crash while making a
low-level parachute airdrop of supplies to the newly-established weather
station in Alert, Northwest Territories, Canada. The parachute became
entangled in the plane's tail and this caused the crash. The nine men
were laid to their final rest near the western side of the Alert runway
and a Memorial Cairn was erected next to their graves to honour them.
One
of the civilians who died in this tragic crash was Colonel (Ret'd)
Charles Hubbard, who was Chief of Arctic Section for the United States
Weather Bureau. Col. (Ret'd) Hubbard was one of the original planners
and supporters of the setting up the Arctic weather stations.

Yes, very sad.
There's been some more security patches for common programs.
First, Adobe Reader, Acrobat and Photoshop: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/05/14/adobe_critical_fixes/
These ones are easy - just open the program and click "Help", then "Check for Updates".
Next, there's a nasty hole in 7-Zip - it allows remote code execution by way of poisoned RAR files!
https://landave.io/2018/05/7-zip-from-uninitialized-memory-to-remote-code-execution/
Fixing it requires an update to 18.05, but unfortunately, 7-Zip does not have a built-in updater like a lot of apps.
So
you will have to manually fetch the update - I recommend uninstalling
the old version, then downloading and installing the new one:
https://www.7-zip.org/download.html
That's the cleanest way.
As always, it's best to install the fixes ASAP.

That

Someone should chuck me out on a boat with the requisite gadgets and a

out where you were on the planet. Sadly 45 years have washed the
technical details into the backwaters of my memory banks. ::) ;)

Enduring side effects can include light sensitivity, double vision and visual distortions. Some can last months, or longer.
?My
vision is considered 20/20, because I see the A?s, B?s and C?s all the
way down the chart,? said Geobanni Ramirez, 33, who had the surgery two
years ago. ?But I see three A?s, three B?s, three C?s.?

Tap the spacebar to start the trebuchet, when the gnome gets near the top hit the space bar again to launch the Gnome.
To early it goes up and down, to late it plows into the ground.
Ah,
much easier using the space bar instead of clicking the mouse! I
actually got some scores this time :) (nowhere near yours,
obviously!)

Happy 24th Birthday Hanibal for when the clock rolls past midnight.

That's
an interesting one. :o I'd like to know more about that - is this poor

worry for me. 20/20 with no glasses - very fortunate indeed.

It was

This answer is going to be so obvious that I may be embarrassed to ask it.
For some time Eastwind has been doing some "BT" observations in Baffin Bay.
What does BT stand for? :-[

;D
Looks like someone was trying to avoid an awful job like holystoning luckily for us ;) :D
-
If I have got all that wrong and we end up in Siberia, I think Michael will make me do more than Holy stone.
-
I think that's the farthest north I've seen any of our vessels so
far! Very cool, I'm sure the weather observers in Alert were very happy
to see them.
Alert's Max/Min for that day: 1.1/-3.3C.
-
10/10 ice as thick as 18ft. had to use explosives to make way.
-
You should put it in an ice museum and charge the people a buck and a half just to see it.
In
the Arctic, the sea ice hit a record low this year for ice older than
five years, and scientists say the summers will be ice-free in the
Arctic Ocean in the future ? the only question is when. The last four
years have been the four lowest on record for the maximum winter sea ice
extent and clearly, this trend will continue.
-
The hardworking transcribers on Yorktown:
- lollia paolina;
- Lekiam;
- leelaht; and,
- Zovacor
have pushed the number of completed WRs on Yorktown, the last Phase III ship, to 99%.
I propose a lottery the winner being the person who is closest to guessing the completion date, with bragging rights as a prize.
On
the first of each month I run a script that estimates the completion
date, based on the estimated number of WRs remaining for each ship, and
the number of WRs for each ship entered for the previous month.
This was the summary for this morning, July 1;
During the past month:
4 people were active.
The four most active people were:
lollia paolina with 3463 WRs
Lekiam with 2879 WRs
leelaht with 2430 WRs
Zovacor with 528 WRs
and, a total of 9300 WRs were entered.
No-one broke into the top 100 this month.
========================================
Phase III estimated completion date is: 21 Jul 2018
Ship WRs left
----------------------
Yorktown 6212
----------------------
Total: 6212
This was the weekly summary from last Monday:
During the past week:
3 people were active.
The three most active people were:
lollia paolina with 840 WRs
leelaht with 696 WRs
Lekiam with 672 WRs
and, a total of 2208 WRs were entered.
The percentage done, 99%, is rounded off, so somewhere between 98.5 and 99.5% of the total has been done.
So, my guess for the completion of Phase III is 25 July at 2200 UTC.
Good luck!
-
Good work everyone!
-
25th July - isn't that exactly six years after Phase III was
launched? I know it was around then, but I don't remember the exact
date...
But yes, this is great! I look forward to the completion (already got something planned for the Gallery...)
-
So what's your guess for the completion date?
-
Given the well known effect of being close to finishing (staying up
far longer than you intended etc), my guess is July 21st at 2100 UTC.
-
When you finish Yorktown please DO NOT come over to Eastwind as I only have a year and a half to finish the whole set of voyages.
That will be done before end of July 2018.
Thanks.
-
So what's your guess for the completion date?
I will go for July 22nd, because... I dunno. Somehow, I like the number.
-
So what's your guess for the completion date of Phase III (USS Yorktown)?
Here are the guesses to date:
- Michael: 25 July 2200 UTC
- Helen J: 21 July 2100 UTC
- Hanibal: 22 July
- AvastMH: 20 July
- Hurlock:19 July
-
Hmmmm - knowing how we finished other sections of OW in super fast time I'm going to try July 20th then :D
-
I think you will all be super pumped and will finish on the 19th July

Do
you get the same bug when you run a different browser? If so, you might
want to re-install your main browser. Hanibal or other techies might
have a better idea. That's all I can come up with.
-
I'm afraid there's not much you can do, since it is on the inside of
the screen - that would require a lot of disassembly by a professional.
But whatever you do, don't do this: https://kotaku.com/i-squished-a-bug-inside-my-monitors-screen-and-now-i-wa-1796152848

it crawled up your avatar hooter somehow and is now out of sight. Out of

Randi - nice one, if only it could find the Gates to get out of the screen. :o
hanibal
- Wah! What a nightmare- I realised that it was in the screen when I
tried to blow it away. Next thought was absolutely to avoid squishing it
since its broken body would shout its recriminations every time I
turned the screen on. ???
A friend of mine squished an ant
that had crawled onto his text book and flicked it aside. A few minutes
later the body was returned to the death zone by another ant. Ant 2
walked over and dumped its dead friend right back at the crime scene.
Chris swept the body away and dismissed the whole event. A few minutes
later Ant 2 returned with its dead friend and dumped it on the death
site again. It happened a third time at which point he professed his
misery and guilt, shut his book quietly and slunk away. ;D
And as I write I realise that Billi Bug-a-boo really has slunk away. Bye bye Billi ;) :D

Wednesday saw both the hottest Fourth of July in Pittsburgh

A public service announcement:
I got an email this morning claiming to be from PayPal, inviting me to 'update my information'.
(My email program flagged it as a possible scam.)
It has been forwarded it to spoof@paypal.com and deleted.
PayPal emails address you by name; if your name isn't there, assume it's a scam.

Thanks Caro - I've only recently signed up to Paypal, so it's good to know what to look out for on genuine emails.

Any time I get one of those types I delete the email and use MY Browser address with the company to contact for issues.
For phone calls I hang up and then use the number printed on the Credit card or whatever.

We're just back from visiting family and friends in southern and
central British Columbia and Alberta. The one thing I wanted to do was
to re-take a photo of the Athabaska Glacier
(http://www.geonames.org/5887918/athabasca-glacier.html) that I took on
August 17, 1968, which I did on the 17th of August this year.
A
couple of notes. So far this has been the third worst season for wild
fires in B.C. Last year was the worst. The image from this August is not
very clear because of the widespread smoke. Luckily for me, the smoke
wasn't as bad at this time as it was at other times during our trip,
sometimes the visibility was as low as 1/2 mile. As you can see, the
glacier has retreated west of the moraine that you can see in the
foreground of the later photo. In 1968 it was very close to the lake,
which is now slightly larger than it was then. There is now a path that
you can see on which you can walk to the toe of the glacier. The lower
parking lot would have been just under ice fifty years ago.

1883 The installation of the first electric lighting on board a U.S. Navy ship is completed on board USS Trenton.
The
lighting on the USS Albatross was installed about a year earlier than
that and was the first US Government ship with electric lighting. I
think this was mainly to allow the laboratories on board to sort
biological specimens from the dredges at night. It was also used
sometimes to attract specimens to the ship at night.

That's an appropriate "reminder to us all of the great
sacrifice our forefathers made for world freedom that we enjoy today,"
notes Robert Charlesworth, chair of the event organized by the nonprofit
British-American Connections Pittsburgh. The theme also ties in with
the group's WWI Centennial Appeal for Veterans that started last fall
(and continues, in a scaled-back way).
With 14 events so far, Britsburgh runs Sept. 4-9 with a strong British accent.

From punishing to pleasurable, how cursive writing is looping back into our hearts
Brigid
Guertin, executive director of the Danbury Museum & Historical
Society, has struggled to find interns capable of deciphering the
sepia-tinted documents of their city's handwritten past. "The majority
of our assets are in cursive and not transcribed," she said.
So
three years ago she launched cursive camp, in hopes of training
tomorrow's interns today. Surprisingly, children and parents flocked to
it.

I'm at A1 this week installing a massive new digital imaging
facility in the Innovations Hub. 2 large format platforms for oversize
material, 34 feet of workbench, 2 z-tables, space for 4 student interns
and a project coordinator. I'll send pictures once its more than a pile
of parts. It is hotter than the underworld in DC, for which I am poorly
adapted. And so Seas of Knowledge is getting underway on a 3-year voyage
of discovery through a shoot list of more than 5000 US Navy assets from
the Civil War era (1861-1879). BTW, our imaging operation is now in a
public area in the Archives, so its possible to visit once things are in
full swing.

Sounds like fun! 8)

It's supposed to cool off this weekend.

Thanks, Kevin. Great to hear that Seas of Knowledge is moving along.
It's hot here too although it is supposed to be cooler tomorrow.
Early dismissals continue for schools
High temps expected through Thursday
By Elizabeth Behrman Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Some
students will be sent home early for at least a couple of days this
week as a heat wave causes stifling temperatures in some of the area's
school buildings.
All Pittsburgh Public Schools students were sent
home two hours early Tuesday and will be dismissed early again on
Wednesday, spokeswoman Ebony Pugh said. Students in the Butler Area,
Shaler, Mount Pleasant and Laurel Highlands districts were among those
who were also dismissed early Tuesday due to the heat.
With
temperatures expected to reach at least 90 degrees, Ms. Pugh said some
of the district's older school buildings can become sweltering.
"Those
schools that don't have air conditioning can easily have classrooms
that read above 100, which then becomes pretty difficult to be in for
hours," Ms. Pugh said.
Tom Green, a meteorologist with the National
Weather Service in Pittsburgh, said Tuesday's temperatures were expected
to reach the low 90s, while Wednesday will be slightly cooler at around
90 degrees, but with higher humidity.
"We probably won't have too much relief," he said.
Temperatures are expected to be closer to 80 degrees by Friday.
"There's not a lot of times in September where we're at temperatures like this, but it does occur," Ms. Pugh said.
Not
all of Pittsburgh's 54 schools have air conditioning, although the
district aims to add cooling systems to most of them within the next 15
years. Some of the buildings are so old that adding the air conditioning
systems poses a challenge, Ms. Pugh said.

OW Tools is back!
From Propriome this morning (my time)
While i wait to see if awardspace is still worth our waiting, i've temporarily moved the site on another free hoster:
https://owtools.000webhostapp.com/owtools/
I
won't add new places there for the moment, as it's using another
database and i'd prefer not having to keep both aligned with updates.
Let me know:
- If the performances are better/worst than on previous host.
-
If you find something that is not working... i've had to adjust a few
little things in the code before new site was fully usable, mainly due
to minor php and database settings.

It's that time of year again - the Ig Nobel Prizes have been announced!
This year's winners are:
Medicine
Laugh: Marc Mitchell and David Wartinger, for using roller coaster rides to hasten the passage of kidney stones.
Think:
Kidney stones account for around 300,000 emergency room visits each
year, and patients usually just wait for the stones to pass, which can
be a long and painful process. The recipients heard enough anecdotal
reports of people passing stones more easily while bungee jumping or
riding roller coasters (like the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ride at
Walt Disney World) that they deemed it worth investigating further. If
you've ever had kidney stones, you'll value knowing that a rear seating
position on a roller coaster is a good way to pass them more quickly.
Anthropology
Laugh:
Tomas Persson, Gabriela-Alina Sauciuc, and Elaine Madsen, for
collecting evidence, in a zoo, that chimpanzees imitate humans about as
often, and about as well, as humans imitate chimpanzees.
Think:
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. It's also crucial to human
development, particularly when it comes to social bonds and the transfer
of skills and knowledge. It has been assumed that chimpanzees and other
non-human primates did not engage in imitation games. This study
looking at interactions between chimpanzees and visitors to the zoo
suggests that might not be the case. The chimpanzees proved to be more
like humans in engaging in imitation games than previously believed.
Biology
Laugh:
Paul Becher, Sebastien Lebreton, Erika Wallin, Erik Hedenstrom, Felipe
Borrero-Echeverry, Marie Bengtsson, Volker Jorger, and Peter Witzgall,
for demonstrating that wine experts can reliably identify, by smell, the
presence of a single fly in a glass of wine.
Think: Female fruit
flies emit a pheromone with a strong unpleasant scent easily detected
by humans, which makes them a great way to tell male and female fruit
flies apart. The researchers were able to identify the specific
pheromone, so powerful a single female fly could spoil a glass of wine.
After all, fruit flies love fruity things, like diving into that glass
of wine you're trying to savor. Thanks to science, if a fly lands in
your wine, you'll know immediately from the "off" smell and taste if it
was a female fly. You can mourn her passing along with the loss of an
excellent vintage.
Chemistry
Laugh: Paula
Romao, Adilia Alarcao, and the late Cesar Viana, for measuring the
degree to which human saliva is a good cleaning agent for dirty
surfaces.
Think: Admit it, you've been known to occasionally use a
bit of saliva to rub off a smudge now and then. Conservationists prefer
their own saliva when cleaning delicate surfaces, like gold leaf or
painted ceramics. The authors' experiment showed that intuition is good
science: saliva cleans gilded surfaces in particular better than other
cleaners used by conservationists. They even identified the likely
component responsible, bringing us one step closer to producing a
synthetic version of saliva for cleaning.
Medical Education
Laugh: Akira Horiuchi, for the medical report, "Colonoscopy in the Sitting Position: Lessons Learned from Self-Colonoscopy."
Think:
Colonoscopies are never pleasant, but some people have more difficulty
with them than others. There's a long tradition of scientists using
themselves as guinea pigs?in this case, to explore whether it might be
better to conduct a colonoscopy while in a seated versus the usual
supine position. That's just what the recipient did, not just once, but
four different times, with varying degrees of discomfort. So even single
patients' experiences can vary. He called for further study comparing
seated and supine positions to determine whether the former might be
better for problem patients.
Literature
Laugh:
Thea Blackler, Rafael Gomez, Vesna Popovic, and M. Helen Thompson, for
documenting that most people who use complicated products do not read
the instruction manual.
Think: The people who design our consumer
products (cell phones, DVD players, and so forth) often complain that
customers just don't read the manual, and thus never make full use of
all the amazing advanced features. The customers in turn feel
overwhelmed by "feature bloat" and don't find those manuals especially
useful, often preferring to figure things out on their own by tinkering.
As the recipients put it in their paper, "Life's too short to RTFM."
Understanding who does and does not RTFM could help companies design
better manuals in the future?which, let's face it, most of us still
won't read.
Nutrition
Laugh: James Cole,
for calculating that the caloric intake from a human-cannibalism diet is
significantly lower than the caloric intake from most other traditional
meat diets.
Think: Why would anyone want to calculate the
nutritional value of the human body, apart from members of the Donner
Party? Someone who's interested in studying the rare cases of
cannibalism throughout history, that's who?not just in modern humans but
also in fossil remains from the Paleolithic era. Turns out the human
body is not particularly high in nutritional value, especially when
compared to other kinds of meat. This suggests that there were primarily
social and cultural reasons people resorted to cannibalism.
Peace
Laugh:
Francisco Alonso, Cristina Esteban, Andrea Serge, Maria-Luisa
Ballestar, Jaime Sanmartin, Constanza Calatayud, and Beatriz Alamar, for
measuring the frequency, motivation, and effects of shouting and
cursing while driving an automobile.
Think: Most of us are
inclined to mutter a bit of profanity when stuck in traffic, but roughly
one-quarter of us are particularly aggressive when it comes to shouting
and cursing at other drivers (especially, it seems, in Spain). The
recipients studied the frequency of this behavior and possible stress
factors behind it, as well as the impact on traffic safety. Most people
view such behavior as relatively harmless, when in fact, that level of
aggression is associated with a higher rate of accidents (a major cause
of death and injury worldwide).
Reproductive Medicine
Laugh:
John Barry, Bruce Blank, and Michel Boileau, for using postage stamps
to test whether the male sexual organ is functioning properly?as
described in their study, "Nocturnal Penile Tumescence Monitoring with
Stamps."
Think: Impotence is embarrassing, to be sure, but it can
also be a symptom for more serious conditions (diabetes, lymphoma, or
arteriosclerosis, for instance). One way to tell the difference between
impotence that's "psychogenic" and impotence that has an underlying
physical cause is whether or not the patient gets erections while
sleeping. Sure, you can hook your member up to a strain gauge recorder
at night or ask your sexual partner to track your nighttime erections.
But it's so much easier to wrap the "stamp ring" (similar in size to
Christmas seals) around it at night and just check to see if the stamp
ring broke along the perforations overnight because of an erection.
Economics
Laugh:
Lindie Hanyu Liang, Douglas Brown, Huiwen Lian, Samuel Hanig, D. Lance
Ferris, and Lisa Keeping, for investigating whether it is effective for
employees to use Voodoo dolls to retaliate against abusive bosses.
Think:
Even the recipients admit in their paper that "it is difficult to offer
direct practical implications from our study." But if you have a
supervisor who routinely subjects you to public ridicule, scapegoating,
or other abusive behavior, chances are you'll eventually retaliate as a
knee-jerk attempt to restore a sense of justice. That usually escalates
the situation and could end up adversely impacting the company's bottom
line. Stabbing a voodoo doll representing your supervisor with pins can
be cathartic. It's one kind of psychological tool to right the balance
of feeling wronged, and it could spur discussion of other
non-confrontational strategies to deal with this common workplace
problem.

I can only apologise for my successor. We only terrorised
pedestrians rash enough to cross our path on the roads. In my day we had
to have numbers painted on to our rear mudguards which allowed id of
college and, through them, the inidividual. So, if this still applies
and you are intimidated by bikers on a space reserved for pedestrians
get the number and complain to the college. BUT some footpaths are
so-called 'shared spaces'. Bikes are supposed to give way to pedestrians
but enforcing it is more difficult. Adults cycling on reserved
pavements is an offence, some latitude for children though.
As an
ageing and arthritic pensioner I try to avoid 'shared spaces' in urban
areas. Canal towpaths etc are usually better and disused railway tracks
are usually OK if you walk along the side and don't weave around too
much.

So - anything other than whaling ships to work on? :)

I think there is only 1 yr of the Corwin left in Ice Hunting and weather, and Vibia has that reserved.
I have only Nov 1882 to do (having already done 1884) then I am also looking for work. That should be finished in a week
Maybe
Vibia could give up the Corwin 1881 as Randi says she is currently
doing a good job elsewhere. I could then complete the full set of
Corwin.
Just a thought.
-
Hi Kathy! :D :D :D
Yep - avoid Whaling- things
are pretty much wrapped up there at the moment, that and it's lack of
being able to work out when it's been transcribed three times, make it a
might messy just now.
I better let Randi talk about Ice hunting since I'm still heading into all of that from Whaling.

-
Hi all -
thanks for the suggestions! Is there any idea when (if?) there will be more than ice hunting to do? I miss the logs....
There is
more ice hunting around and especially more full (weather and events)
transcribing. You could team up with someone so that one person does the
events page and the other person does the weather page!
-
Is that the way it is now? Do you have to partner with someone? Are logs assigned? How do you access the ships?
-
Here are a few answers...
No, you don't have to partner with anyone. However, if you want to do only weather or only events you can!
Currently available ships are shown in:

and

A few days ago, Apple released a huge number of security fixes for pretty much all its big products:
https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/10/30/apple_security_updates/
As
always, I recommend installing these updates as soon as you can get
them (except for watchOS 5.1, which has broken devices!
(https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/11/01/apple_watch_4_borked_update/))
But that might take some time - I haven't been able to get the one for macOS on my work computer.

My favourite snippet of the week, from a book about eccentric Church of England clergy:
'Lancelot
Blackburne had a successful career as a pirate before ending up as
Archbishop of York. As one contemporary put it: "His behaviour was
never of the standard expected of an Archbishop - indeed, it was rarely
of a standard expected of a pirate."'
-
Wow! Wonderful comment ;D
(Although I can't help wondering what standards were expected of pirates)
Lancelot
Blackburne (sometimes Blackburn, Blackborne or Blackbourn[e]; 10
December 1658 - 23 March 1743) was an English clergyman, who became
Archbishop of York, and - in popular belief - a pirate.
He was
described by Horace Walpole, in his Memories, as "?Blackbourn, the jolly
old Archbishop of York, who had all the manners of a man of quality,
though he had been a buccaneer, and was a clergyman; but he retained
nothing of his first profession, except his seraglio."
-
Yes, I wondered that! Though I'm sure that having a seraglio
was never considered quite acceptable for the clergy, let alone an
archbishop. The present Archbishop of York has announced that he
will retire before too long, and I've already seen a suggestion that
experience as a pirate ought to be on the list of experience for the
next one ....

I am a little late but 11 Nov 1940 was the date of the great
Armistice day storm 1940. it killed over 154 people including over 50

is the deadliest day for duck hunters in US history. Sometime called

Oh dear - I have to admit that one of the logs has that well known syndrome - using a glass of water instead of a pot of ink.
I
hope I haven't made Whaling look too mad though. I've tried to give a

One on one coaching by an expert!
And if there is something you don't like about the system, you have a chance of getting it changed!
The writing is no worse than the RN logs and the imaging is better.
(although I can't say the same for the spelling)
-
Well, I for one want to complete the RN log editing, I've got
Torch's yellow highlights to finish and I'm nearing half-way through
Cornflower. Whether there will be any unedited logs after I finish
Cornflower I don't know. I do want to go back to a couple of my early
ships and use my improved skills to bring their logs up to my current
standard - tracking down ships & locations mainly because I was too
much inclined to trust the log-keeper and only really chased up stuff I
couldn't read.
After that I'll be looking for a job (preferably
at double rate of pay!). I'd love some more RN logs, especially WW2, but
nothing in prospect so I'll have a look at some of the other options
within OW. There are possibly some other editors who may feel the same
but the Whalers do look a bit daunting. If I can save work in progress
then I might stick with it. I don't like to feel that I've got to
complete a hefty wodge of input before I can do anything else or lose
the work I've done.
-
I can understand going back to work on edits. I had a look through
my one-and-only yesterday (The Acacia). It was a nice trip down memory
lane. :)
Randi is right :D I'll
absolutely support OW-whalers one-on-one. I wasn't sure about the
whalers at the start - but I love them now. And, bless them, because
they come from relatively small communities they have similar styles of
reporting events. You get fewer details to report, but there's something
just magical about the sense of freedom that they had to follow the
whales. There are few sentences spent on whaling, it's not graphic.
Retrieving the ice front and weather details gives back something for
the yearly toll of cetaceans. :) 8)
Trips to Hawaii and
Micronesia are available - though they will be left to the end as we
pick out the 'ice voyages' first. :D
I think that we can probably run to double pay ;) ;) ;D
-
If

feel that I've got to complete a hefty wodge of input before I can do
anything else or lose the work I've done.
You can save a work in progress with both OW: Arctic and OW:Whaling.
Since we developed these versions, we did our best to fix the annoying features of the Talk versions ;)
-
I expect that OW Whaling will prove to be one of those things that
looks really daunting at first glance, but when you break it down into
small steps it becomes manageable. I'm glad to hear you can save a
work in progress though - it's a big help to be able to finish when
it's convenient rather than having to persevere through to the end of a
particular piece of work. However, I'm only committing to helping
with beta testing. I am still editing the logs of Capetown but
don't expect there to be any more RN ships left when I've
finished. The idea of going back to logs I've already edited is
not that appealing to me.
Seas of Knowledge does seem
quite appealing based on what I know and would prompt me to educate
myself on the American Civil War. Presumably they'll let us know
when they need beta testers.
I do have some unrelated projects I'd like to find time for, but I certainly wouldn't want to lose touch with OW altogether.
-
I do have some unrelated projects I'd like to find time for, but I certainly wouldn't want to lose touch with OW altogether.
:D :D :D
The
ability to pick up and put down the OW/OWW work is important. I've been
breaking the logs down in OWW to make sure that we do the ice section
of the voyages first, but it also means that there's nice chunks to pick
up and enjoy. Equally if one section is too much you can take a break
from it, even let it go on to someone else if need be. :)

Fascinating.
I particularly liked the bit about the enemy submarines being absent in
the afternoon because the warmed water caused problems with the sonar.
The ocean is so cold that it's not something that I'd ever think to
worry about. :-\
-
I have read that melting ice up in the artic in WW II also played
havoc with sonar sometimes. Yes water temperature and thermal layer will
also effect sonar. Very bad if you are in a RN warship escorting a
convoy and a U-boat sinks one of your ships and you can't pick the thing
up on sonar or asdic.
Also the wreck of the Argentine submarine
ARA San Juan has been located on 18 Now 2018 the boat was lost with all
44 crew including the Argentine Navy's first submarine officer in
November 2017.

water affecting radar - never thought of that before. And now thinking

It seems to go hand in hand with Chaffing gear which also sounds painful.
-
From the Sailor's Wordbook:
PUDDENING,
or Pudding. A thick wreath of yarns, matting, or oakum (called a
dolphin), tapering from the middle towards the ends, grafted all over,
and fastened about the main or fore masts of a ship, directly below the
trusses, to prevent the yards from falling down, in case of the ropes by
which they are suspended being shot away. Puddings are also
placed on a boat's stem as a kind of fender; and also laid round the
rings of anchors to prevent hempen cables or hawsers from chafing.

How to Stop Apps From Tracking Your Location (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/10/technology/prevent-location-data-sharing.html)
-
Hmmm! There were no instructions to turn off the location on my wall phone! ;D ;D ;D
-
Just another reason why I'm holding out against getting a smartphone ....
-
Thanks Randi - I have a smartphone, as it is unfortunately not
possible for me to make do without, so I turned off the location.
Also:
Every time I create an account with something, I always go through the
settings and try to max out my privacy as much as possible.
But it can be pretty hard to keep track of everything you use, and whether you still need it or not.

Just to keep you in the fun mood, here is an oldie but goodie.
Is a computer male or female?
A
professor at the end of his last class to a group of post-graduates
told the students that he wants to have one last group activity with
them before he leaves the college. He asked men to move to one side of
the class and women to move to the other side. He then wrote the
following question on the board and asked both the groups to think about
the answer with justifications:
"Is the computer a male or female?"
Men's response: The computer is female because
No one but their creator understand their internal logic
When computers communicate with each other, they communicate in code language only they can understand
Every mistake we make is stored in their hard-drive which can be retrieved later
As soon as you commit to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck accessorising it.
Women's response: The computer is male because
To get their attention, you need to turn them ON
They have a lot of data but still cant think by themselves
They are supposed to solve our problem, but half the time they ARE the problem
As soon as you commit to one, you realise that if you had awaited a little longer you could have got a better model
Looks like the girls had the last laugh this time around.
;D
-
I've always said that in the old days the devil tormented
people with boils and sores and pestilence etc. etc. Now he just gives
us a computer.
-
In German, which has gendered nouns, the computer is indeed male! ;D

Its Good To Be A Man
Wedding plans take care of themselves.
Chocolate is just another snack.
You never have to drive to another gas station because this one's just too icky.
Wrinkles add character.
Your pals can be trusted never to trap you with: "So, notice anything different?"
One mood, ALL the time.
If you are 34 and single, nobody notices.
You can quietly watch a game with a buddy for hours without thinking "He must be mad at me."
The same hairstyle lasts for years, maybe decades.
Your belly usually hides your big hips.
You can "do" your nails with a pocketknife.
You have freedom of choice concerning growing a moustache.
You can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives, on December 24th, in 45 minutes.

Speaking ENglish Could Kill You !!!
The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or the American.
The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or the Americans.
The Japanese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or the Americans.
The Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and also suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than the British or Americans.
THE MEDICAL CONCLUSION IS;
Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

For the ladies: on youtube they have getting dressed videos on how
women got dressed over the centuries here are some from the WW I period:
getting dressed WW I the VAD nurse ( todays ladies might think how can a woman work dressed like this?)
getting dressed in a 1914 fashion ( todays ladies might think hey she looks great but it is a pain to get dressed like this)
getting dressed WW I the young women ( todays ladies might think hey I could wear something like this today)
I hope this is of some interest

I watched the WW1 nurse - imagine that lot on a hot summer's day? :o It does look smart though :)

Santa is not what Einstein would expect...so I guess the presents will

How many

Can't count them. I'm watching it now and still about to cheer when the
judge decides for Santa...Yeeeeehhhh!!!! Phew - judge made
the right decision (again). ;)

Wow, Maikel, that is stunning - just watching all the ships suddenly
appearing as the War started really brought home what a cataclysmic
event it was ....

Thank you all. :D
I'm not quite sure the burst of ships at
the start of the war is truly representative of the real number of
vessels before, during and after the war.
We have transcribed only a selection of the logs, and of a limited period, too.

Out with a splash: Pittsburgh area closes 2018 with precipitation record
Almost from the start, 2018 socked southwestern Pennsylvania with rain-driven landslides, flash floods and swamped basements.
Now the region has closed out the year with a soggy new record.
At
5 p.m. Monday, the steady rain falling in Pittsburgh nudged the region
past the high-water mark set in 2004, according to the National Weather
Service in Moon.
That year, 57.41 inches fell in the area, said
Shannon Hefferan, a meteorologist at the weather service. The new record
claimed in 2018 is 57.53 inches -- but it won't last long. More rain is
expected to add to the tally by midnight.
