Hi Els and Geoff. It's a bit early for rum but I do happen to have a nice bottle of Captain Morgan's in the cupboard.
Essential stuff when it comes to making Christmas puddings etc. ;D
-
Mornin', all!

:D :D LOL Great choice :D ;)

Who here remembers The Navy Lark??
-
Hello, shipmates!
I just keep marveling at the things a
Navy would consider naming a ship. Invincible? Isn't that
sorta asking for it? I keep waiting to run into HMS
YouLotCantHitTheBroadSideOfABarn, which, I'm sure, would currently be
residing at the bottom of the sea.

Morning all
Yup, dayshift reporting for duty ! :D
-
Wait... I thought I was on the day shift. Although it
looks like night out the window right now. Gloomy day here.
Which I like, or I couldn't live in Seattle.
Mornin', shipmates.

Morning shipmates, coffee on the go here!
-
Morning all
Getting ready for another day at sea ! :D
-
Hi,
Probably be less active today , work slightly busier on a Sat ;D
No coffee for me but a fresh mug of tea on the brew.
::)
-
Woke up today to find a mutiny had taken place whilst I was
asleep. Coffee and an hours work has brought it all back under
control though, but I was not impressed. How are you supposed to
Captain a ship if you have to watch over you should every five
seconds? Tsk!
-
Morning shipmates :)
Don't think I have to worry about
mutiny - my ship is stuck in Portsmouth being refitted, very boring!
They've also removed the barometer ("Barometer unshipped") so less
entries in the weather report.
-
Good morning all. ;D
-
Hello all, my name is Chris and I joined a few days ago. I'm not sure why but transcribing these logs is curiously relaxing.
Oh,
and I think I'm the mutineer screamingguns is talking about? I don't
think he needs to worry, I don't get too much time to do this. But I'm
enjoying chipping in when I can.
-
:) Hello shipmates and welcome on board seldon9
-
Hi Liz. Good day to you all, shipmates. ;D

Haha,
I'll keel haul you! Keel haul I say! It was more the shock
of it all seeming as I didn't expect anyone else to be putting in any
serious time on her yet. You might be able to help me though - did
you get the period of time when she had a change of navigating
officer? I think it's the navigating officer who makes the
entry (Feel free to correct me people). Because the hand writing
has definitely changed, and the new guy is no where near as clear in
what he's writing in the notes.
-
@screamingguns
;) Saturday night and my partner had Strictly and the X Factor on. I just got carried away.
I've answered your question in the HMS Kent thread.
-
'ello, shipmates!
Things are starting to smooth out around here. Everyone's getting so much done. Nice work, folks.
And now for the 12th cup of coffee of the day and more Old Weather. OW.

-
Hello OW. Bit chilly around here this morning. :D
-
and here. At least it isn't raining like yesterday which was a bit
of a bummer when it came time to cycle home from work :'(
-
Woke up to a layer of snow that had been crisped by the frost. Gorgeous blue skies, but now the rain's back >:(
-
Good morning all. Frosty this morning. >:( ;)

Good morning Old Weather :) :) :)
-
Morning all ! :D
Coffee anyone ?
-
Morning shipmates - finished my coffee and moved onto tea.
-
Good afternoon. Should have been at home today which undoubtably
would have involved some transcription but the RN had a "little" problem
and I had to search some databases. Maybe something this evening.
-
Good Afternoon! Cold study so fluffy socks and a hot rooibos tea. :)

I'm
into Russian aircraft and did try to bring a dozen aircraft over from
Moscow some years ago but the plan fell apart when they started asking
silly money figures. Pity.
-
Zoot: Wouldn't parking have been a bear? No pun intended.
Geoff:
Is that how you Britside folks do that? Coffee AND tea? Not
just tea? Well, I can scratch off the only reason I could ever
come up with not to move to the UK someday.
-
No Bear's were involved although I was asked by people from the Tupolev Design Bureau how much I thought a Bear was worth.
It was more on the lines of MiG-15/17/21/25/29, Su-15/17/25/27, Yak-28/38
Sadly,
the price started shooting skywards at which point the British side
took fright. The aircraft are still out there rotting away...
-
Anyhow, I've got a week's shore leave so will be back in a week's time
keep up the good work and carry on, No.1
*pipes ZHR down the gangplank*
-
Good morning OW. Enjoy your leave zoot. ;D
-
Hi Everybody. I'm currently captain of the Sirus on blockade duty
off the German colony of Cameroon in October 1915. Not much happening,
but still very engrossing. Tea-time now ;D
-
Welcome aboard djj. ;D
-
djj
You lucky person. Interesting and long forgotten
campaign. You can find the London Gazette despatch, naval casualties and
honours/awards at
http://www.naval-history.net/WW1Battle1409Cameroons.htm
HMS
DWARF, also being logbooked, was there. As I've said elsewhere she was
attacked with a similar weapon to the one used by Humphrey Bogart in the
old movie "The African Queen" - in that case against a small German
vessel on an East African lake.
Gordon
-
Evening shipmates. My ship is currently about 30 miles inland from
Rio de Janeiro (according to Google Maps) so I'm taking a bit of a rest!
-
Hi Geoff,
that must've been exhausting, getting a ship that far inland ! ;D
-
Heyya, Geoff.
Wasn't there a scene like that in the last Pirates of the Caribbean flick?
-
Good morning/afternoon/evening shipmates. ;D
-
Heyya, Geoff.
Wasn't there a scene like that in the last Pirates of the Caribbean flick?
I
wouldn't know, never having watched any of these. They have been
filming bits of the latest one in Greenwich recently and had film sets
all over the Royal Naval College.
-
Hi Geoff. Fitzcarraldo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitzcarraldo),
based on a true story apparently, involves a steamer being dragged over a
hill in Peru. ;D
-
Morning shift. Good morning OW. ;D
-
:)/
time to get going early. The boss is out. i can probably get to 2k before the end of the day
-
Glad to hear that you are gainfully employed andy. ;D
-
hehe. Who ever said that investment bankers are busy people!?
-
:D Hello shipmates just got off work :D
-
Re: Fitzcarroldo, the RN did this with two gunboats in World War 1
in East Africa. The boats were Mimi and Toutou, and the man in charge
was an apparently rather mad officer called Spicer, who was supposed to
have occasionally worn a grass skirt. But he did clear Lake Tanganyika
of the Germans, capturing one of their boats and naming it Fifi!
The
official despatch is at
http://www.naval-history.net/WW1NavyBritishLondonGazette1707.htm - a bit
down under Tanganyika Naval Expedition.
You will find more elsewhere on the internet, and there is at least one book on this remarkable man and his accomplishments.
Gordon
-
Good morning OW. ;D
Thanks for the info Gordon. There I was thinking that the character portrayed in Fitzcarraldo was a bit over the top.
-
I've just read part of the account again. They MUST have been mad:
"After
being landed at Cape Town the boats had to be taken 2,300 miles by
train, via Bulawayo and Livingstone, to rail-head North of
Elizabethville in the Belgian Congo. Next followed 150 miles of haulage,
by atrocious roads, over country varying in altitude from 2,000 to
6,000 feet. Then another journey on trucks over a short section of
railway. Then the boats were floated 400 miles down the Lualaba River
under their own power for part of the journey, and for the rest on
lighters. Shoals and rocks abounded, and barrels had to be lashed under
the boats to reduce their draught. The final stage of the journey was by
rail again to the small Belgian harbour of Lukuga, about halfway up the
western shore of the Lake."
They did use the old-fashioned steam road engines, but also a lot of African porters.
Gordon
-
Spicer Simpson's 'fine record of courage and perseverance' sounds more like lunacy to me.
But who am I to judge; I guess they thought it was worth it.
-
Good morning Old Weather crew. ;D
-
:D Good day shipmates
-
Hi Liz. Still captain? ;)
-
:D :D Captain Liz just dropping by to Good Day. ;)
-
Hi Elizabeth and everyone - I've been sneaking in Old Weather while
I'm here at work, but now I have to get back to business :)
Have fun!

Happy logging
Haywain
-
I thought you were going Haywain. ;D
-
I am now - had a couple of slightly more interesting pages, You know how it is!
-
Haywain - too addictive for words. My family and work are in danger of becoming OW-widows and widowers.
Gordon

Good morning/evening OW. ;D

-
Hey Zoot
How were the holidays ?
-
:D Good day shipmates. That video was 8)
-
Hi Liz. Did it make you want to join the navy? ;D
-
:D No. but it did remind of the time, when I was young..going
to fish in the ocean with my inlaw's new boat. Crossing the Bar at
Florence. The sea was rough. Made it to kind of calm waters everything
was fine until they looked at me. Water had come over the boat and I had
hit my head on the cabin door. :( Coast Guard escorted us back to
shore ::) Ambulance and hospital personnel where wonderful. Stitches.
Never have gone back to sea. :(
Oh and the boat got hurt also. :(
-
;D
Never gone back to sea, until now that is ! ;) ;D
-
:D :D LOL ;)
-
Evening shipmates :)
-
Evenin', Tsering and all.
Looks like it's gonna be a cold watch tonight. Six glasses of brandy, please. To go.
-
Hey Zoot
How were the holidays ?
Good
thanks, I didn't see any Royal Navy ships sadly. In fact, apart from
one freighter and a bunch of local fishing boats the only vessel I saw
was a suction sand dredger.
Escaped the dentist and had a good
ice skating lesson and didn't break any bones (unlike one of our number
who broke her wrist last week whilst I was away)...
-
:) Hello shipmates
-
Good morning OW. ;D
-
I miss my ship (Roxburgh) my laptop has blown up so have not been in for 3 whole day!!
-
ow, poor GHFM.
Hope a new lappy will come along real soon !
-
Sorry to hear that, GHFM. I can relate. I hate being
cut off from things like this when my computer goes on the fritz.
-
Good afternoon friendly sailors. I ought to pop in here more often, but I get terrible seasickness. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I wonder what the ships' crews would have thought if they'd known we were going to be doing this in almost 100 years' time? :D
-
Nice question Alice.
One thing is sure - they would write more legible :P
-
I would hope so ! ;D
-
Good morning OW. ;D
-
Morning shipmates - about to set off for my weekly pub lunch :)
-
Geoff
Shall be doing the same shortly so mine's a double rum.
Badskittler

-
Good morning,
for me it's back to the Crocus ;D
-
And the Amethyst for me! I had to go two days without transcribing
(sob, sniffle). When I left her, Amethyst was in Montevideo. Two days

-
Morning world! Time to do a few more pages before going off to real work.
-
Good morning Haywain, good morning all. :D

Kathy

Shiver me timbers, that was mighty pleasing right enough! :D ;D :D ;D :D
-
Hello! I'm back.
-
Hi Zeus. ;) Good morning OW.
-
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum! Top of the morning to all, me
harties - I love "Talk like a Pirate Day"! A former boss's
birthday was the same day and in recognition of that, I would answer the
phone with a hearty Argg, and everyone in the office would talk like a
pirate...
Kathy
-
:D Good day Shipmates
-
Hiya Liz. ;D
-
Good morning OW on this Armistice and Veterans Day.
Lest we forget.

Indeed. I'm wearing my poppy, and will be thinking about the men on the ships I've transcribed.

Good morning all
very wet and windy over here !
-
we are in a very nice stretch of fall weather here outside of DC -
frankly, I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop - we will soon be in
cold and rainy fall - spring is like this also - freezing, freezing, wow
5 days of lovely spring and BOOM! 95 degrees (F ;D) and 95%
humidity.
-
just wanted to ask - do any of you feel like evangelists besides
me? I seem to be proselytizing Old Weather were ever I go - please
say you do it too - otherwise, I really have just become to geeky/nerdy
to be believed! ;D :D
Kathy

I
spent an hour today sending an email to the father of my wife's best
friend. He's a science fan/dabbler, he's at least somewhat
computer savvy, and he might be a bit bored these days. I put
together this monster email about the entire Zooniverse, with
descriptions of each project and links to the sites and at least four
major news articles about each. With heavy emphasis on and bias
toward Old Weather.
Why? I call it ROCEL. (Ridiculously Obsessive-Compulsive Evangelistic Lunacy.)
-
With an acronym like that you are in good company. The great
Alan Turing used to talk about the future of computers as romsing
"Resources of Modern Science"-ing

Good morning OW. :D

Morning shipmates and Caro :)

::)
-
Good work captainflint. :D
Welcome to the forum.
-
Thanks Caro.Help please, I want to change my username as I didnt
realise we would be getting 'promotions' and calling my self
captainflint seems the wrong thing to do.
If I change it will my previous logs still count?
Thanks for your time.
-
I don't think you need to change your name.
We have quite a few captains here already, including Captain Bligh. ;)
-
Dear Captain CaptainFlint,
I am both CharlesNorrie and CharlesNorrieTemp using the same email about, after I got difficulties with the first name.
I simply add the numbers together, which I suppose would be a very sinple job at Administrator level.
-
Happy Thanksgiving OW!!!
-
:D :D Happy turkey day everyone.
-
Hello, Mr. & Mrs. OW and all the ships at sea!
-
Greetings all ;D
Had a bit of a computer disaster but back aboard now :) :)
-
Glad to see you back again Haywain. :D
-
Back with the same computer, or was it one of THOSE disasters,
requiring painful cash outlay and weeks of installing needed programs?
-
Sadly one of THOSE :( But she didn't owe me much really, quite
a venerable beast, so it was only a matter of time. It may yet rise
pheonix like from its slumber as a spare, when I have the time to do
some serious poking!
After Christmas would have been better from a
cash flow situation, but then I would have to pay an extra 2.5% VAT so
its all swings and roundabouts.
-
Morning all :) back on Old Weather after a bit of break doing Galaxy
Zoo ;) I see quite a few vessels finished. Congrats on all the
hard work :D
-
Good evening all. ;) Chilly around here!

I haven't even seen the out of doors today, and it's dark now,
but I sure hear the rain. Strange, this is Seattle. It never
rains in Seattle! (Heh)
-
Hi, everyone.
I'm pleased to announce that Janet Jaguar
has joined the moderator team here at Old Weather. She was already
answering questions for everyone, so it should be an easy transition
for her.
Welcome aboard, Janet.
-

-
Welcome Janet. ;D
-
I think it's going to be fun!!
-

:o I lived in Seattle for 7 years it only rains if the sun has shown for 10 minutes.
-
Good morning/evening shipmates. ;D
-
:D Hi, Caro and it is goodnight for me talk at you all later.
-
Morning shipmates, very cold outside this morning! Think I'll rejoin the H.M.S. Capetown in Bermuda and warm up :)
-
Morning to all crews. Returned to German East Africa. The weather is
quite nice and warm not as here where last night about 5" of snow went
down last night, which is quite rare for this period of the year.
-
Morning OW ! :D
Winter Wonderland over here as well.
Coffee anyone ? :D
-
Morning sailors :)
Hi Els, I've finished my coffee and moved onto tea.
-
We had a first real snowfall yesterday - 2 inches: snow
paralyzes Washington DC even more than an election year does! ;D
Kathy W.
-
:D Good day shipmates.

All best and keep up the good work.

I've been to Greenwich and back, and took some photos. I'll try to
remember to put some of them on here after I've had my tea!

Morning OW - started to thaw here (east London).
-
Hello
Here in pre dawn western Ohio, it is minus 4 C with an ice storm on the way. Whoopie!!
I am so tired of winter already and today is Day 1.
All best to all. Keep up the good work!

-
Morning Don. Makes a change, South Wales is as cold as Ohio. Gordon
-
Hello OW. Hello Liz. ;D
-
Here in Renfrewshire it is even colder, rarely been that warm(!) for
the last 3 weeks. The trees look beautiful but a change would be
nice.
-
:D Good day shipmates, Hi Caro
-
Hi Liz. Dark and cold here. :P ;)
-
:) Cloudy slight wind and rain here.
-
Sounds quite nice compared to slush, ice and fog. ;D
-
Rainy and cloudy here, but an unseasonably warm 51 degrees. Time to work on that infamous Seattle rain tan!
-
Seattle has some of the best cloud-shade in the country! We had a warm day here in Chicago, c & 36o. Snow's supposed to stay away until Friday - so there's a white Christmas in the works. :D
-
I grew up in Louisiana, where we don't tan, we rust.... ;D
Here in Maryland, it is very cold and windy -maybe the storm of the
century (hehe) coming or maybe not...
yours,
Kathy W.
-
Good morning OW, good morning Geoff. ;D
