Doing the Jan-Feb voyage, definitely found some ice :P

3 Feb 1951

1022 Ship Jammed in heavy ice shelf

1348 UDT started laying demolition charges to free ship from the ice.
1404 Fired 2 1/2 lbs. C-3 charge.
1425 Fired 37 1/2 lbs, C-3 charge.
1527 Fired 80 lbs C-3, 80 TNT. Falling ice from latter blast did structural damage to H035-1 helicopter BuNo (?). 123120 beyond repair on board.

1614 Fired 1st shaped charge 40# M3.
1628 Fired 1 shaped charge 40# M3.
1711 Fired 160 lbs of explosives to starboard freeing ship of ice shelf. Backed clear, to open water.


On another note, it looks like the weather in late January in the north pacific was very bad that year.

As soon as I read "demolition charges", I thought to myself "that sounds dangerous".
I read on to find that it was.

I suspect that BuNo is Bureau Number.
http://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/ref/OPNAV_29-P1000B.html has several abbreviations starting with Bu for bureau - but not BuNo.
