5 August

1030 The Captain held mast this date and awarded the following: SCOTT,C. (n),Fl,634-01-66. Direct Disobedience of orders, insolence to a petty officer and aiding in lighting fireworks in a Living compartment. Punishment: Five days confinement.

Also, does anyone know what this could be referring to?
1251 Changed course to 030 (T), 004 (PSC) to stand clear of suspicious looking water.

Thanks for posting that!

Sounds like a lively ship ;D

Appropriately enough, it appears that Scott, C. was a Fireman, 1'st class.

Perhaps they think the water is too shallow for the ship...

I entered their noon position (70 11N, 163 13W) in https://www.itouchmap.com/latlong.html, and it shows that they are off the coast north of Point Lay.

Here is a nautical chart that shows the area: https://historicalcharts.noaa.gov/historicals/preview/image/9400-5-1947

You can find that, and others, at https://historicalcharts.noaa.gov/historicals/search

If you mean the (T) and (PSC), his course is 030 True, or 004 Per Standard Compass. (Magnetic). The magnetic declination for Point Lay in 1947 was about 22 degrees. He was measuring about 26 degrees, however their gyro compasses were sometimes off by one or two degrees or even more. Sometimes you will see something like: 030(T) 028(PGC) 004 (PSC)

Was wondering what was meant by "suspicious water"

I guess the most likely explanation is it looks shallow, not sure what else it could be

Apparently so:

https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/media/12098154/content/arcmedia/dc-metro/594258-navy-deck-logs/00003/burton-island-agb-1-1947-08/burton-island-agb-1-1947-08-0041.jpg

1000 - The Captain held mast and assigned the following punishments: ADAMS, F. E. MOMM2, USN, offense; Running a gambling game for profit. Punishment; Summary Court Martial.

Also found this a few days earlier:

https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/media/12098154/content/arcmedia/dc-metro/594258-navy-deck-logs/00003/burton-island-agb-1-1947-08/burton-island-agb-1-1947-08-0037.jpg

1337 - Passed unidentified wrecked passenger and cargo ship on the beach bearing 048 t at 2 1/2 miles.

In terms of ice I have looked through most of August, ship passed 55N on the first, and went back below it on the 17th, with ice observed between the 7th and the 13th.

Doesn't look like there will be any more ice
