Michael has done Ice Hunting for this year, but at that time the science team only wanted 8am, noon, and 8pm locations.
The science team now wants the hourly distances and courses.
Since this year was not transcribed during OW3, the science team would also like to have all the weather.

On the weather page, please enter: date, locations, distances, courses, and all the weather data in the columns outlined in red in the spreadsheet.
(The weather data requested here is the same as it was during OW3.)
One weather transcription (Stream 1 in the Tracker and highlighted in orange) is sufficient.

On the events page please enter: date, location information and sailing information.
Other events are optional. Since Michael has already done the ice, mentions of ice are optional.

One person can do both weather and events, but the system allows one person to do the weather page (Stream 1) and a second person to do the events page (Ice hunting and/or Stream 3).

Every transcriber needs to enter the date.
The date is used to organize the pages.
(If one transcriber does events and weather and they are in the same image, the date is only entered once)

A number of crew are mentioned as having 'enlisted for clothing' when they are discharged.  I have not come across this before and wondered if they are being given a clothing allowance when they are discharged.

Oops error on my part.  :-[  Too much time taken between looking at the page and posting about it.  The lowest value is on the 21st and is in the 28.80s.

28.8 seems a bit low, but the long swell and heavy rolling suggests some weather somewhere near-ish. That said, looking closely at the 21st, it looks like most of the 28s are over-written by 29s, but can't say which is on top. Likely 29 I think.

Thanks, Kevin!

Only looking at the numbers and not what they mean, the 9 seems to have been overwritten by the generally darker 8 :-\ :-\ :-\

Sorry, but the 8 has been overwritten on the 9. You can see 29.00 at noon (https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/media/6919263/content/arcmedia/dc-metro/rg-026/585454-noaa/bear/vol107/26-159A-bear-vol107_146.jpg) and the pressures have been slowly rising.

You can see on this chart (https://weather.gc.ca/data/model_forecast/528_100.gif) (top right corner panel), valid about an hour ago, that we have three lows with 977, 986 and 953 millibars for central pressures.

The lowest pressure in the logs of 28.87 inches corresponds to 977.7 millibars, which is reasonable, even for May.

Sent United States Commissioner Dempwolf, Deputy Marshal Mueller and Assistant Surgeon Watkins ashore to obtain information and secure names of witnesses in shooting of Russian coast guard by an American on the "Seawolf" at East Cape on about June 2, 1913, also to obtain Ole Gunderson as witness in criminal case to be tried at Nome - at request of U.S.Attorney of that place.

September 3rd 1913
https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/media/6919264/content/arcmedia/dc-metro/rg-026/585454-noaa/bear/vol108/26-159A-bear-vol108_071.jpg

Sent officer ashore to obtain information concerning overdue gasoline schooner "Seddon".  Upon landing at the village of Cape Prince of Wales it was learned from Dr Thompson that the "Seddon" had been wrecked near Sinrazat, about 20 miles South of Shishmareff Inlet on a sand reef, or island, about one mile off shore, water shallow enough to wade ashore.  This information was brought by a native named James, who said that he had seen some pieces of the deck house, some bedding and a flagstaff of the "Seddon" on the beach on September 1st, but none of the survivors of the crew.  Nothing of the hull was seen and this was probably broken up also, as the water is very shoal in this vicinity.  The native further said that while on his way down the coast before sighting the wreckage, he saw a small, white, two masted gasoline schooner pass Shishmareff Inlet on the morning of August 30th bound North.  It is possible that this gasoline schooner has picked up the crew of the "Seddon".

Sent an officer ashore to obtain further information of "Seddon" from natives.  7;30, officer returned with a pilot house or cabin door, flagstaff, two signal bells, pressure gauge, and sail of the wrecked gasoline schooner "Seddon", picked up along the beach at Sinrazat; also additional information that native James saw the only boat of the "Seddon", a small dory, broken up on the beach, also part of hull with vessels name and hailing port on it, and that, examining the beach carefully, no signs of life were seen at or near the scene of the wreck when he passed on 1st inst.  Vessel prevented from examining coast at Sinrazat by fresh on-shore winds, but evidence is positive that vessel is total wreck and all hands probably lost unless picked up by some passing vessel, as native boat would have seen them had they been anywhere along the coast in that vicinity.  arrangements were made with natives, in case any bodies were washed up, on the beach in future and found, that they would send word to Nome as soon as possible.

I am not sure of the details but looking up the ship name and date gives information that the Seddon's crew of 3 did survive.

Bear September 20th 1913 Unalaska
https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/media/6919264/content/arcmedia/dc-metro/rg-026/585454-noaa/bear/vol108/26-159A-bear-vol108_088.jpg

Crew washed down poop deck with sand and landed both bower anchors and chains and spare anchor, mooring chain and stores from fore hold on wharf in effort to raise bow high enough to locate leak.  Found one iron strap broken, two rivets in iron stem piece loose, and several bow plates loose and heads of some rivets in same worn off, - result of work of vessel in ice during summer.  Carpenter drove in some wooden plugs in rivet holes and endeavored to stop leak by calking between plates about six inches below water line, but was not successful, the leak being apparently lower down.

The vessel has been leaking since it was grounded, while trying to avoid ice,  near Point Barrow at the beginning of August.

Carpenter and one hand caulking and plugging seams and bolt holes in bow plates as far as practicable - endeavoring to decrease leak in bow, the main leak being well below water-line and beyond reach, while vessel is afloat.

Meanwhile

Commanding and Wardroom Officers gave a smoker to officers of "Manning", "Explorer" and "Patterson"

Bear is running into lots of ice in the vicinity of Nome and Saint Michael at the end of May and early June. Here, from midnight on June 4:

0010: stood various courses to Northward to escape field of ice, which was being brought in by flood tide

Here is the current ice edge for 29 April 2019, five weeks earlier than the 1913 report. The red X marks the general location of Saint Michael.
