Found this about Mr W.C.Gray
W. C. Gray had served as the official photographer of the Third Alaskan Reindeer Expedition of 1899 that sailed on the U.S.S. Revenue Cutter Bear. The cramped conditions on board the ship and the arduous, lengthy journey weakened the health of the seventy year old man, who had to leave the company part way through the voyage. Gray never fully recovered from the arduous effort of the trip, although his enthusiastic descriptions and large collection of photographs convinced his son in law to take William and Ralph Purcell to Alaska in 1900.

It is not surprising S.J. Call had serious health problems:

Gold medal for rescue of whaling fleet: https://www.loc.gov/law/help/statutes-at-large/57th-congress/session-1/c57s1ch1311.pdf
The first surgeon (medical doctor) to receive a regular commission in the Revenue Cutter Service was S. J. Call. He received a commission as a Revenue First Lieutenant on 20 March 1905 (as per William R. Wells, II "Who's on First").
