Couple of quick questions, mostly to make sure I'm doing the right thing:

https://catalog.archives.gov/OpaAPI/media/6919206/content/arcmedia/dc-metro/rg-026/585454-noaa/bear/vol065/26-159A-bear-vol065_014.jpg

On most pages they seem to have helpfully filled out the distance run by log since previous noon.

I've been writing this as a sailing summary at Noon, along with the entries which say stuff like course+distance by mercators log to Akoutan Pass N63W 1030

Should I keep doing this? Is there a different category for these entries?

Also, what do you want me to do with the longitude entries at the bottom of the page?

Hi Joke Slayer,

I just returned from eight days away and now I have a computer with a screen large enough for my old eyes.

I don't need the longitude at the bottom of the page, nor the miles run since noon the previous day or the mercator distances. When I do the hourly calculations my software flags large errors and, if that's the case, I can look at the event page myself for hints.

Thanks for asking...

at 3 stm Launch and party returned accompanied by Passt Eng Zane + Asst(?) Surg Nash U.S.N. of the Stoney expedition Lieut Stoney being at the head of Selawick River.

Found a detailed account of the expedition

Quote
Accompanied by machinist Price and three natives, Howard started north

on April 12, 1886, and reached Point Barrow on July 16, after a journey

of ninetey-six days. His route led across the Notoak to the Etivluk River

and thence by ways of the Colville and Chipp rivers to the arctic coast.

He remained at Point Barrow until August 13, when the U. S. revenue cutter

Bear took both him and Price on board for transportation to Hotham Inlet

where the ship was scheduled to pick up the rest of the expedition by

the end of August. (For full account see Rear Adm. W.L. Howard).

The expedition left Kotzebue Sound on the Bear on August 28 and

landed in San Francisco on October 21, with every member in the best

of health.

Something to look forward to  :)

For once an arctic expedition which doesn't end horribly

Picked up Mr Howard on 13th August

Also 6-8PM discovered a lump (?) with 6 feet of water in it

should that be a lagoon?

It does look like the word lump. I wonder if they are seeing a pingo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pingo).

It looks to me more like "on it" than "in it" :-\

Given that they were just talking about ground ice, I wonder if they could mean a lump of ground ice that broke lose and has a melt pond? :-\
