Tensions
between naval crews and ocean scientists that so often appear in the
annals of oceanic exploration (the United States Exploring Expedition of
1839-42, commanded by the naval of.cer Charles Wilkes (Stanton, 1975),
comes to mind(10)) seem to have been largely absent from the Albatross.
Much of the credit for this happy situation needs to go to Lieutenant
Commander Zera L. Tanner, who remained in command of the ship from 1882
to 1894. He was admired by the Fish Commission's staff as a bluff,
ruddy-faced skipper who ran a taut but fair ship (Linton, 1915:749;
Young, 1922:364-365). Tanner's fellow naval officer, Seaton Schroeder,
the Albatross's executive officer and navigator from 1882 to 1885, also
commented on his captain's character by describing him as a "consummate
seaman" with "a remarkable insight and balanced judgment regarding both
men and things, coupled with an iron nerve and decisiveness (Schroeder,
1922:160).
Tanner's marine skills were especially required when
the ship deployed its large trawl nets in deep waters. During these
operations, a constant strain needed to be maintained in order to
prevent the trawl's steel cable from parting during the four or more
hours required to complete a deep-water operation (Washburn,
1886:20?21). One Albatross scientist later claimed that Tanner never
severed a dredge line (Townsend, 1924:620). But this is an exaggeration
since, on at least one occasion in August 1885, the cable did part,
resulting in the loss of more than 3,000 fathoms of wire rope plus the
entire beam-trawl assemblage. On other occasions, trawl nets came up
empty due to the failure of Albatross's crew to place these devices on
the ocean floor(11).
Nevertheless, there is no doubt that the
captain and his crew had notable operational skills. Tanner, himself,
generously gave much credit for this situation to the vessel herself. He
once described Albatross as having special strength and seaworthiness;
the ability to "lay-to" in heavy seas, while recovering its scientific
gear, without shipping water over the bow or stern; and having an "easy
motion under all circumstances [that] was necessary to the safety of the
steelwire dredge rope" (Tanner, 1895:117; Schroeder, 1922:165-166)
(Fig. 20).
At the same time, it must be acknowledged that the
Albatross had one major operational problem. Almost from the time of the
ship's commissioning, it became clear that the ship's boilers were
faulty. By 1884, the ship's engineer, Passed Assistant Engineer George
W. Baird, U.S. Navy, reported that metal fatigue was the culprit for the
many boiler leaks that required the crew to make almost constant
repairs(12).

"B. F. Tracey (2 C.F.) was released from confine-ment.")

I don't suppose the firemen were exactly the cream of society ;)
and these were only second class :o
The
name Fireman enjoys a proud and storied history. The name originated in
the days when the Fireman was responsible for keeping the fires burning
in the ship?s boilers which were used to make steam. The steam powered
large turbines then produced the ship?s electricity and turned the
ship?s propellers.

Ironically, Albatross was known for it's boiler problems ::)

I'd read the Wikipedia page and will have to check NOAA page when the gov.'s back up :-X
So, was their rowdiness a cause or effect of the boiler problems ;)?

They
may have been caught in a descending spiral - attitude lets machinery
slip out of line, which highly irritates the attitude, etc.
-
Good point, and this was just the beginning of the descent! That ship appears to have had so many engine problems!

Hi Camiller,
Inst. is an abbreviation for the Latin "Instante mense", which means "this month".
You
can find it mentioned in the "Abbreviations (non-weather)" thread
(http://forum.oldweather.org/index.php?topic=639.0), and there has been a
nice discussion on the subject here in the forum if i can remember
well.
-
:) Thanks! Glad to know that I read it correctly without
context! And now that you mention it, I also remember the recent
discussion.

Kevin,
I left this unanswered thinking the transcribers would know. But
clearly they don't. I did check it out after Joan brought the
unanswered question to our attention - I think what you are up against
is that this is the ship's log.
Only the sailing of the ship is involved, and the scientists are simply
not-involved passengers who sometimes interfere with ship function by
asking for dredging. They are never listed on the crew pages.
They
should always be noted in the comments of the log on the day they came
on board for the voyage. but that isn't guaranteed and is unlikely to be
in the forum comments anyway. I don't know if it would help you
anyway, as far into the voyage as we are. It may be in
non-digitized state at the Smithsonian. Maybe.
Sorry I can't help.
-
In later voyages I have not seen any listing of the science
staff. They are usually mentioned arriving and leaving the
ship. Usually referred to as Mr but they get an occassional Dr or
Professor.
The multifascetted Mr Harry Clifford Fassett may be the
only permanent science staff. Others are sent for set times from
the fish commission or various universities. The local press is a
good source of names just before the albatross sets out on a
cruise. There are also the reports it does to the fish commission
and to the senate to look through for information. The Smithsonian
has the lab logs and dredging details I think.
Alexander Agassiz did some important work on oceanography and marine biology at this time on the ship.

Rated Wm M.Harrison (Lds) to Ships Yeoman
I
wonder if he is the new log keeper on Albatross as we are now getting
things recorded in a slightly different way and some beginners errors in
WRs
-
Unlikely, watch-to-watch log keeping was typically done by the
ship's quartermaster back then, although it was sometimes done by ship's
navigator, when they didn't find the quartermaster's abilities up to
snuff. Also, at the time, the rating of quartermaster would have been
held by an enlisted man, rather than an officer, so it's altogether
likely that their name isn't even listed.
In our ship's case,
it's hard to say who is writing the logs, although it seems that almost
certainly wasn't Waring, what with his horrible penmanship.
